Should we be compensated for allowing venue to use our pictures?

The venue where we're getting married wants to use our wedding as part of their promotional materials.
Everything from the caterer to the DJ is being done through them.
They want to have a photographer and videographer take picutres and videos of the entire event.
We haven't said yes or no.
They sent an e-mail a few weeks ago and I said I have to talk to my fiancee.  We talked, but don't know what to make of it.
They sent an e-mail yesterday so now I feel I have to give them an answer.

I grew up spending a lot of time in the area of the state where the venue it located - although not excatly at the venue.  They want to make a story of how much I "loved the venue every summer that I decided to return and have my wedding there".

Anyone have any advice, suggestions/tips?

Thanks.

Re: Should we be compensated for allowing venue to use our pictures?

  • if u havet spent every year at the venue but just the area, yet they want you to say u went to the venue yearly and loved it thats a lie/  i would ask them if you wll be compensated for the use of your pics.  but if you dont have copyrights to video or photos then the venue can use them how they see fit
  • Thanks. Now what? If the conversation goes like this.... Me: Will we be compensated? Them: How would you like to be? ... What do I say?
  • i have no clue on how convo goes find out firs if u have copyrights to pics and videos.  if u do then tell them you want percentage off for using your image and you get final say on how things look.

  • Ask them to give you a discount on the venue in exchange for the use of your photos.

  • I think you need to a) tell them you have approval of any quotes adn that you are uncomfortabel with that specific line-then maybe provide a few alternatives and that b) if they are willing to knock out the cost of hte photography, you'd be happy to oblige.  Photographers, at least in Atlanta, run about $2K-4K so if they'd knock that much off, then I'd say go for it.  And to be honest, I'd say, knock off $5K and I don't care what you do with the photos or my quotes...or whatever number woudl make you feel comfy saying that.  They are using you as a model for a photoshoot./advertisement so like any other model, you shoudl be compensated.  I doubt you'll get photo approval, but you shoudl have some say so in quotes from you.  Then again, ever see an ad on tv witha  famous spokesperson?  They don't have any say in the script but they get paid.  I think if you look at it more that way you might fidn the process easier to handle.  Good luck!
  • the photographs are property of the venue, read your contract again.
