Anyone Else Bored and In a Chair for >8 Hours?

So I just spent my lunch break at Target buying things I didn't need.  I've been super munchy and all we have in the office is chocolates and thin mints, so I got a skinny latte and some Annie's organic gummies.  I'll still be over my calories, but after already enjoying two thin mints, I needed to find at least a moderately better option before totally ruining my day.

Anywayyy, that is entirely not the point.  I find many of us posting on here throughout the day, and though I know we're all on different time zones, I have to imagine that most of us are at work.  So it got me thinking if we could collectively come up with a 'I can do this subtley at my desk' light workout.  Chair dips are hard on my rolly chair, but I could try.  Anyone have fun desk workout ideas?  I'd love to burn off some of my snack food while I'm still here! :)

(Plus, the mental image of us all doing this at our respective desks around the country is both cool and amusing to me at the same time. What an awesome way to burn an extra, maybe, 50 cals?)

  • I'm one of the people that sits at a desk most of the day....when the weather was nice I was using my afternoon breaks to take walks - I felt like that alleviated a LOT of the pent up energy. I also leave for lunch almost every day and just go home...the walk to and from my car gets the blood pumping again. Winter is currently driving me nuts though!

I think the most important thing is to just get up from your desk as often as you can. I try to space out bathroom breaks and sending stuff to the printer to maximize having to get up. I also stretch a lot in my chair (nothing too obvious).

  • Yep, I'm chained to my desk all day as well.  I like the chair exercise idea.  We have a small fitness room (two ellipticals, two treadmills, two weight benches) downstairs at my office, and I was thinking I should go down there once or twice a day for a 15 minute walk.  Winter is keeping me in hibernation mode, too.  H and I have a YMCA membership, and for several months we were pretty good about using it (though H was much more diligent than I).  We've been married for four months and I haven't been to the Y since a week before the wedding.  H hasn't really been going either.  I'm really starting to feel bad about it :(

  • I often walk around on my tippy toes. Any way to get sexy calves ;)

Ankles weights with simple leg lifts (hello sexy quads :P )
  • I am also stuck at my desk 9 hours a day and in a rolly chair....

My office is right in the middle of everyone because I am the mail getting and answer phones so everyone is always in and out. I dont want to work out in front of everyone so every day, my mom and I go out and walk for ten minutes down the street and back up.

If I cant get out, I go to the stairs and have someone watch the phone so I can go up and down as many times as possble in my break. I also have a radio in there and I get up every 30 minutes or so and stretch and pretend I am messing with it just to move.

If nobody is around, I do knee highs till I hear someone come in. The office normally takes lunch at the same time so I do what I can when they are not here. I wish I could do more because I am so energized at work but by the time I get home, I am mentally drained.

I look forward to reading more posts from everyone!!

  • I thought about the workout ball Liatris but I did not know if it would work and does it get to be too much all day for a newbie like me??

[QUOTE]I can stand at my desk now, but at my last job I sat on a workout ball. It makes you sit up straight and uses some muscles to keep from rolling away. I would recommend it.

That's a good idea.  I would get some odd looks but luckily IDGAS :)

  • When I develop some of my experiments in the dark room and I am buy myself I totally do mini exercises.  When I'm busy at work I'm usually standing or walking around a bit but lately it's been dead.  Lots of sitting on my bum.
  • haha, that made me smile kw.  that, and the alcohol I just bought.  ps, gummies are my favoritist favorite of any edible thing ever.

  • Lia's suggestion of a large exercise ball is great!  I've never done it, but I've had a few coworkers do it--it forces you to keep a tight core and use all those little muscles even though you're desk sitting.  I have a "desk job" but sometimes end up walking a lot during the day--space is super tight at my client site, so we have a floor in an office building one metro stop away.  I hate walking in the cold or heat, but sometimes don't have time to walk to the metro and take it one stop to client site, so I end up walking the 12 minutes to client site.  Usually this is like a once a day kinda deal since I'll just stick around at client site after, but there have been days where I've done the walk 3 or 4 times-which is kinda cool since it gets me about 3 miles of walking (not bad in the spring or fall, but wow I get grumpy when I have to walk in the DC summer).

I do get "mouse arm" once in a while--from not moving at my desk.

[QUOTE]Not related to this discussion, but the fitness coach on the Bridalicious board told a girl eating 1200 calories a day that she didn't need to eat back her exercise calories.  I just...no.  I generally approve of him, but had to call that out a little bit It must be almost time to leave work.  I<strong>'m getting stabby</strong>.
