Just Engaged and Proposals

Your ring

I know when you get that amazing engagement ring you had been waiting for you want to keep it on  your hand FOREVER and suddenly you feel naked without it ... but is it really good for the ring to wear it all the time including while showering, while doing dishes, cleaning the house...etc?  Any of you knotties have a special place where you put your ring for those occasions or you wear it all the time in fear of losing it? I've heard stories of girls losing it so I have yet to take it off...been engaged 3 weeks...what is your opinion?

Re: Your ring

  • I don't sleep in mine (I don't like sleeping in jewelry in general), nor do I shower in it. I have the box it came in which is on my nightstand, and have a general rule that if it isn't on my finger it has to be in the box... I don't want to randomly set it down on a countertop and forget where I put it. Also, make sure you have insurance on the ring just in case.

I don't take mine off at all. If I'm washing really dirty dishes, I'll put gloves on. If I were to take it off I would probably just put it in the box it came in.

ETA: And I've worn it all the time for 6 months and it's still as sparkly as ever.
  • As soon as I get home I take my ring off and put it on my dresser. I actually hate wearing jewelry and its pretty big so I always knock it on stuff. The only times its ever on is if I'm out of the house. If you want to wear it all the time, though, I don't see a problem with it. Diamonds are meant to last so I can't see you ruining it. Make sure you get insurance though in case it gets lost!

  • I take mine off a LOT. I probably have it off my hand more than I have it on. No special place.. just back in the little box it came in.
  • I usually wear mine until I start dinner and it always goes back in the box and on my nighstand. I've never had an issue with not knowing where it was.

I have a ring box on top of the dresser in our bedroom. I only take it off to swim, to do any cooking that involves me putting my hands into meat/dough/food, if I'm outside doing landscaping in the dirt, painting or putting on lotion (gums it up pretty bad). I wear it almost nonstop. My ring is a family heirloom three times my age. FI's grandmother who wore it before me NEVER took it off. If no one prior to me has ruined it yet from wearing it 24/7, I'm pretty positive I won't ruin it either.

  • I don't sleep or shower with my ring on. If I wash dishes with it on I wear gloves.

  • My rings aren't sautered, so when I get home from work I put my e-ring away (in a jewelry dish in the bathroom) and just wear my band for walking the dog/ going to the mailbox/ around the house. I also sleep in it.
I think whatever the case, get into a routine and always put it in the same place when you're not wearing it.
  • I don't have an e-ring, but wear two rings daily 1) a promise ring with 3 tiny diamonds (past 4 years) and 2) a ring from my mother with a large amethyst and two small diamonds (past 6 years). I rarely, if ever take them off regardless of me putting on lotion, doing the dishes, sleeping or being at the gym.

The bands have warped on the bottom slightly (flattening out) and they need to be cleaned often - every other month or so- and I feel safer knowing that they're on my fingers, but I lose stuff all of the time.

  • I don't sleep with mine on.  I take it off at night before I go to bed and put it on after my shower in the morning.  If I'm doing any dirty work, I take it off too.  I always keep it in my jewelry box on my bathroom counter.

  • I take it off when I shower (I have a special hook in the bathroom that I hang it on) and sometimes when I sleep I put it on the arm of Tvsaurus Rex, the plastic dinosaur that sits on top of our bedroom tv .

  • I take mine off to wash my hands, do dishes and shower. Other than that its on my finger where it belongs :)   I also give it its monthly cleaning just to keep it extra sparkley.

  • I take my rings off when I shower and sleep and if I'm doing something messy in the kitchen (like making dough!) I have a china cup and saucer set that I inherited from my grandmother that holds it in the kitchen. Otherwise both me and my H put our rings in a little wooden jewelry box when we're not wearing them.

  • Only take it off when I'm painting.
  • I only take off my ring in two situations:

    1. Washing dishes - water gets under the band and it spins around driving me absolutely insane.

    2. Working out.  My fingers swell making it hard to get off.

Otherwise?  It's on.  My grandmother wore the ring for sixty years before me and she absolutely never took it off, even when stuffing the Thanksgiving turkey.  I eat, sleep, shower, and do everything else with my ring on.  After all this time, my ring is perfect and beautiful.  It was made to be worn.

I wear my ring all the time, even while sleeping. I do not wear my ring when showering, doing the dishes, washing my hands, cleaning with chemicals, getting a manicure or swimming.  The jewler said over time, soap & chlorine can damage the diamond clarity, etc.  So, if I'm headed to the beach or pool or nail salon I go without.  I put it in the same place everytime I take it off so I know where it will be.
  • The only time I've ever taken my ring off is when baking bread. I've actually never met anyone that really takes their rings off unless they were pregnant.  Must not be as common around here? I know my mother never takes hers off. I always figured these rings were made to be worn.

  • Mine is never ever ever NOT on me. In the rare instances that I decide not to wear it I put in our safe deposit box.
  • The only time I take my rings off is if I'm putting lotion on or mixing something with my hands.  When I was pregnant with our daughter, I had to take it off for the last 2 months because I swelled up pretty badly and didn't want to risk having to get it cut off.  Other than that, it's always on.

  • I will only remove my e-ring if i have to because i feel really naked without one on my finger as i had worn a promise ring for a year already on that finger before the e-ring. When i'm working I take my e-ring off and replace it with my promise ring because i work in a kitchen and i dont want to get it filthy. My fiance bought me a white gold necklace to put it on when i do work so i can still have it near me. I always sleep in my ring but i will take it off when i shower, wash my hands or do dishes/cooking. I'll just take it off and put it on the necklace or put it in the box where my wedding band is kept. It's never anywhere else but those two places so it doesn't get misplaced.
