To Anyone Who Knows Baltimore...

FI and I are going to his cousin's wedding at the American Visonary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD in a few months. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on places to stay (for preferably under $175 a night) that are near by or if you could recommend restaurants/things to do? It's a Friday night wedding, so we just decided to stay the entire weekend and neither of us have ever been there before. TIA.

Re: To Anyone Who Knows Baltimore...

  • I don't know much about Baltimore, but if you are going during baseball season you could go to an Oriels game. I don't even like baseball but their stadium is really cool and worth going to. It would also be nice to go to Annapolis for a day.

Hehe.  I did that when someone asked for advice on where to stay and what to do in Philly.  I wrote a giant post and had to stop myself from writing more.

::waiting::  Since I don't live far away from Baltimore, maybe you'll inspire me to go visit!
  • An Oriel's game and the aquarium sounds fun. I'll have to look into those.

Celtic - Write away. I hardly ever travel, so I want to take advantage of this weekend trip, haha. And have you been to the Edgar Allen Poe Museum? That was one thing I wanted to do, but I heard it may close in June?

Check out booking.com. I have been looking at them for wedding night hotels and they've got better prices than anyone else. What kind of area do you want to stay in? I'm not too aware of any hotels that aren't super expensive right near the VAM. It's close to the Inner harbor so there are a ton of hotels but the prices are high.

I think we may use the Hotel Brexton. It’s in our neighborhood and has a great reputation and relatively reasonable rates through booking.com. It’s maybe a mile and a half from the harbor and all it’s attractions and there is a free bus that will take you right down there. We love our area because there is a lot to do but it’s more low key then some of the other popular neighborhoods. Be advised that it is the gayborhood though!

Other than that I am not a huge help with hotels here, I’ve never stayed at any!

Our aquarium is great, but a bit pricey. There are two free art museums if that is your thing. I prefer the Walters, which is in the neighborhood I mentioned above. Ft. McHenry may be worth visiting if the weather is nice.

I’ll second the Orioles game suggestion. The park is gorgeous and as long as neither the Red Sox nor Yankees are in town tickets are dirt cheap. For your sake I hope they are not in town, it jacks up hotel prices.

There are a few nice neighborhoods for window/real shopping and people watching – Fells Point, Fed Hill, Hampden.

I’ll add more to do items as I think of them. If you let me know when you’re coming exactly I can tell you if there are any festivals going on, we have some great ones.

I can recommend a lot of places to eat! We eat out a lot and have tried a wide variety of places.

Top of my list would be Brewer’s Art if you like beer at all. Their food is phenomenal and they brew all their own house beers. The dining room menu is on the pricier side but they have bar menus that are delicious and reasonable. It may be kind of packed if you go there on Fri/Sat night. My father is a major foodie and that is by far his favorite restaurant in town.

Abbey Burger is great; they have all sorts of meats and build your own burger options.

One Eyed Mike’s has great food too, and they’re the first and perhaps only Grand Marnier club in the country.

Joe Squared is a pizza joint that I love but it seems to be a love or hate for most people. They do very thin coal oven pizzas.

There is a great Ethiopian place in our neighborhood if you’re adventurous. We also have good sushi, Indian, and Thai.

If you tell me what kinds of things you like I can give you more food suggestions! I can add more too if you decide where you’re staying.

  • I've never been to the Poe House but I know they have been struggling financially. I'm hoping the city will help them out and keep them running but only time will tell.

  • We're going the weekend of August 3 (I'm trying to plan ahead). As far as food goes, I'm vegetarian and I love ethnic foods, especially Thai and Indian, and I'm not very picky. FI is super, super picky (like we go to a Thai restaurant and he gets plain rice) about anything that's not Italian. So, we'll probably end up at a pizza place, haha.

Yay definitely Brewer's Art!  We always stay at the Mt. Vernon Hotel.  It's nothing fancy but it's always clean, and more importantly its walking distance from all the good stuff in the Mt Vernon area (and there's a city parking garage right across the street--we don't move the car all weekend and just pay the lost ticket fee, so $17 bucks for Fri-Sun).    Hotel Brexton is in that neighborhood too and is supposed to be really nice.

I love the Baltimore Museum of Art up on the Hopkins Campus.  They have an amazing Matisse collection, and Gertrudes (the restaurant in the museum) has great Sunday brunch.
  • You can go to an Orioles game (if they are in town).  The inner harbor always has a going on in the summer.  If you are into the night life you can check out Canton, Fells Point, and Federal Hill.  The Power Plant, is close to the harbor and they have some fun bars.  I love Howl at the Moon however, it can is always crowded.  Last year my friend had her bachlorette party at PBR (professional Bull Riding) it's to watch people ride the mechanical bull.

As far as day time activities, you can check out the Aquarium.  There are a lot of local shops around the harbor. If the Orioles are not in town you can always take a tour of Camden Yards. If you like seafood you should check out Phillips.

If you wanted drive around you should visit downtown Annapolis.  It's about 30-40 min from downtown Baltimore. They have a lot of good resturants.  If you like Irish food then I recommend  Galway Bay. Some other nice resturants are Pussers, Yellowfin, and Jalapeno's.  Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
