Getting in Shape

Is there an exercise that truly cinches your waist?

I'm 5'9" and I weigh 135 pounds on my good days, so I don't want to lose any more weight, but I pretty much have no waist at all. I would describe my body type as an inverted triangle or rectangle. :(

I've tried a million ab exercises and they do nothing. All I want is a lovely, cinched in waist!! Losing weight didn't do it, and ab exercises just made it more muscular and masculine looking. This is so aggravating. Are there any exercises that truly cinch in your waist and don't just promise to?

  • I'm not sure I know what a cinched waist is, but the best results I've had with strengthening my core muscles was through core exercises such as bicycle crunches, planks (regular and side planks) and push-ups.

  • What I mean by cinched wait is make the center of your waist smaller around. Like right above your hips to create an "hourglass figure".

Are you saying you want more of an hour glass figure (where your waist goes in)? I hope that is what you meant otherwise my answer is not going to make any sense...lol... I've always noticed that the more athletic a person becomes the less "hour glass" their figure becomes unless their hip bones are wide. So it may just be that your body is designed so that your hips are more narrow like your waist so you won't get that "hour glass" shape. And if you add more fat to your body that is no guarantee that the fat is going to go to your boobs and hips to give you that figure...There are outfits, that I remember seeing on TV that you can wear that will flatter your particular figure though.

  • Yes, that is what I meant PhillyBride, lol. I was a runner for several years, so that's probably why I have an athletic looking body. And it seems like as I gain weight it goes straight to my waist, goshdarnit.
  • I am in the same boat! Weight gain=bigger waist for me.
  • Sounds like you just don't have the hourglass body type, and I don't think you can change that through any sort of exercises.

  • try a corset!  that's how I got my waist to go in (at least on my wedding day)

I'm going to have to agree with this.  If your body just isn't built that way, it's probably not going to happen.

That being said, working on developing the muscles in your upper back and shoulers can help give the illusion of a smaller waist.

  • I would also say that it's just the way your body is, and it would be difficult to change that unless you did something with your clothing to create that, like wear a corset.

  • Where can I get a good waist cinching corset then? :)
  • there was a great exercise I discovered last year and I love it.  You need one of the big exercise balls...but you can find them for as little as $5 these days.  You stand in a plank position on your hands and place your feet on top of the medicine ball (so you look like your going to do push ups...which is also a great exercise for upper body too!)  Then you use your core muscles to drag your knees into your chest while trying to keep your balance on the ball.  Its a great stability exercise and I saw (and felt) results quickly.  Also, you can lie on your back, place the ball between your feet and using your core muscles, lift your legs straight up.  This is a great one too!

  • Sounds like I'm built the same as you... it not fair! I get so jealous when I see girls with hourglass figures but I suppose everyone wants what the other has :)
