Luggage Advice

Okay, so I've got a little bit of a dilemma here involving luggage.

We're going to Croatia for 8 days for our honeymoon.  We will be going to the city of Dubrovnik and the island of Hvar.  I'm a fairly light packer, but I do plan on bringing some 'nice' clothes and not going backpacker-chic for our honeymoon (been there, done that, washed undies in public restrooms.)

So here are my luggage choices with the pros and cons.  We are each able to bring a carryon and check a bag for no fee with our airline.  We will be travelling by train, subway, plane, going up a LOT of steps in an ancient city, public inter-city bus, and ferry.

1.  Jam it all into a carry-on wheelie bag and suck it up.  Ziplocs are my friend.

2.  Between myself and the hubster each bring a wheelie bag and share a big suitcase.
3.  Both bring our backpacks which will fit everything but tend to make things wrinkly.  The plus to these is that they're really really easy to travel with, especially going up and down stairs and stuff.  Check 'em and bring tote bags for the plane.

Re: Luggage Advice

  • Great advice, Duds!  I second the one rolling suitcase, and a light backpack or tote.

I always overpack toiletries, so I'm going to have to be really smart about packing toiletries for a two week honeymoon.

  • I just spent 8 days in Vienna with only a carry on.  We attended a wedding and had some nice meals that required nicer cloths.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Option 1 but skip the ziplocks and buy compressable space bags instead. I got ours on amazon for 15 dollars. Just make sure they are compressable not vacuume. Hubby and I did an 8 day Caribbean trip with snorkel gear in carry on only bags plus my back pack and his laptop bag. The kicker was it was winter here so not only did we have our summer clothes for our trip but we each had a winter outfit plus jackets.
  • for only 8 days you probably dont need that much. pack for afew days, wash in hotels, hang to dry and rewear clothes. dealing with steps and transporation iwth a big suitcase is a PITA. I'd avoid at all costs.

  • I routinely travel for business where I am in dress clothes during business hours.  For 8 days, I use a wheeled bag, my laptop bag and a tote with sufficient space for all my necessities for work and after hours..  If you will be hiking as part of your honeymoon, you may want a backpack in place of a tote.
  • I agree with one roller-carryon bag for each of you. I have the kind that have the zipper that expands the suitcase if you come home with more than you went with, which often happens with souvenirs. Plus, on the way home you don't care if it's wrinkled.

I do what Milk Duds does, I travel for work and vacations,  and our honeymoon last summer was 14 days in California. I only pack black & white items in casual and more dressy looks. One pair of heels/slides, one pair of nicer flip-flops in black or white, depending on the season. Since our HM was the longest trip we were taking together, I had my husband lay out everything he planned on taking, and together we went through and eliminated a pair of jeans and a couple of shirts (he calls me the "packing Nazi").

I wear my largest items on the plane (jeans, tennis/walking shoes, heavy sweater and jacket if weather calls for it), everything else fits in the carryon and matches everything else so I can mix & match.

If you need anything you didn't pack, you can always buy it there.
  • I love my backpack.  So I'm for option 3.  Again use the roll the clothes method and that should help with the wrinkles.  Wrinkles are going to happen no matter which option, and I think a back pack will be the easiest to manuever with.
  • I also vote for option 3; unless you know exactly where you're going and have cabs/other transfers planned out, I always find it a pain to be wheeling a suitcase around.  If you roll nicer clothing and hang it up immediately when you get there, wrinkles shouldn't be that much of an issue.
  • Whatever you decide, keep in mind that you may bring back more than you brought due to souvenirs.

When we packed for our honeymoon, we packed a suitcase in a suitcase (so when we left home = one checked bag) and then filled one of those suitcases with souvenirs (flying back home = two checked bags)
