It is odd?

My photographer requires 1/3 down, 1/3 six months before the wedding and the last payment 30 days before the wedding. My mom says this is a huge red flag b/c they have all of our money and could potentially not show, I told that is what a contract is for and she said that still wouldn't change anything if they didnt show.

Has anything ran into this before? Do your photographers require all to be paid prior to the wedding? Help me to understand this.

Thanks!

It is very common now for all vendors to require payment before the wedding.  They are just as worried that they will show up and you won't pay them.  Additionally, you don't want to have to worry about paying everyone the day of the wedding. I would also post this on your local board as they will have a better idea about vendors in your area.

I think we paid a percentage down and then the final balance a month before. Most of your vendors will require it.  There will be wayyyyy too much going on on the wedding day to worry about paying vendors.

It's very common, as the others have said.  I know it seems a little scary, but as long as they have a reputable business and you have a contract and you pay them with a check or credit card (not cash) so you have proof of payment, I wouldn't worry.

Thats pretty standard for most wedding vendors.

Yes, I agree.  I'm a wedding photographer myself, and I require final balance to be paid 2 weeks prior to the wedding date.  When my husband and I got married, all of our vendors required balances to be paid before or on the wedding date, as well.

    Best of luck to you!

Most of our vendors are requesting post-dated cheques. If you don't feel comfortable paying in full beforehand you might want to suggest this. It is piece of mind for both you and the vendor.
