Hawaii, Fiji, or Bora Bora????

Hey! We are starting to think about the honeymoon, we are between Hawaii, Fiji, and BoraBora. What do you think? I need suggestions! We would be going in Oct. 2011

Re: Hawaii, Fiji, or Bora Bora????

  • We went to Hawaii (Maui) last November and loved it.  It had always been my dream to go there so that is what we chose.

That being said, I don't see how you could go wrong with any of them.  The one girl on my local board I have HM envy for went to Bora Bora--it looked fabulous.  However, my DH was afraid there wouldn't be much to do there and I have heard that on here as well--that there aren't a ton of activities there, it's pretty much just lying on the beach.
  • Ditto SummerKutie!  I think she and I are automatically drawn to any post that mentions Fiji!  <waves> DH and I got married and honeymooned in Fiji in July.  We visited Maui in July '09, so I can compare a bit.

We also looked into Bora Bora at first, and I do want to go there someday, but Fiji was much more affordable and we really liked the look of the resorts.  That's what sold us.  Bora Bora was considerably more expensive and didn't include many of the honeymoon extras that the Fijian islands did - we had three free massages in two weeks, bottles of champagne and, with the money we saved by not going to Bora Bora, we were able to upgrade to helicopter transfers and upgraded accommodations.

Fiji's outer islands have beautiful water and white sand beaches. There are AMAZING small resorts with, for example, no more than 25 guests on the entire island at a time.  If you are looking for seclusion/privacy, Fiji wins over Hawaii for me.  Also, many of the resorts, like SK said, include all of your meals.

As far as activities go, it depends.  In the Fijian islands, there's a good amount of water sports - kayaking, snorkeling, scuba.  SummerKutie and I both did secluded picnics.  They took us by boat to a sandspit in the middle of the ocean and dropped us off with lunch and a bottle of wine for a few hours.  We did a village visit and participated in a local kava ceremony as well.  Some of the other hmers at our resorts did sunset cruises, deep sea fishing, ziplining and island hops.

Hawaii offers more land activities in addition to the water-based activities - biking, hiking, helicopter tours, more shopping, etc.

My thoughts are, if you are looking for smaller, quieter resorts, go Fiji.  If you're looking for tons of adventure, go Hawaii.  If you have a really great budget and want that dramatic honeymoon feel, go Bora Bora.  I don't think you can go wrong. :)

Some places we considered in Fiji to get you going -

    Royal Davui
    Likuliku
    Qamea
    Matangi
    Taveuni Palms
    Namale
    Vatulele
    Navutu Stars

GL!  I have all of our pictures on a website.  If you'd like to see them, just send me a pm with your email address and I'll send you the link!

  • We chose Bora Bora for the privacy and "away-ness" aspect of it.  We were not one of those couples that wanted to meet other couples and run around and do things.  We did pretty much nothing for two weeks, and it was perfect.  Everythign was gorgeous and breath taking and everyone was pleasant.  On a side note, they speak French.  Most people at the resorts speak English, and people who provide tours speak English, but we occassionally had to rely on my French language skills.  FYI.  I was really happy with Bora Bora.

That being said, it is incredibly expensive since everything has to be imported there and they know they have you, because you're stuck on an island and where else are you going to go?  One of the PP said that Fiji was less expensive, so if you're looking at it from a budget standpoint and still want the privacy level that would be a good choice.

If you are a go-go-goer on vacation and want to windsurf and snorkel and go on jungle hikes with other people, I would say that Hawaii is probably more along those lines.

  • We just returned from Tokoriki Island in Fiji, it was PERFECT. We wanted to go somewhere outside of the U.S. and exotic. It was quiet and relaxing, not a party atmosphere, but that was perfect for our honeymoon. We scuba diving, visited a village, private beach picnic, lots of snorkeling, visited the spa, etc. so we never got bored.

You can go to Hawaii any time, go somewhere further away and more extravagant. It's worth every penny.
  • A little off, but we went to Moorea and it was absolutely to die for!!  It was like nothing we have ever seen or imagined.  Of your 3, if your leaning more towards Bora Bora, I'd say at least take a peek at Moorea.  It's amazing.

Have a great time, where ever you go!!
