So, I've been having a lot of fun tormenting this poster on A&A. She just keeps defending herself, and I can't let it drop.

Re: *Shakes Head*
I should thank that poster. I got my silver badge today! I think I would still be a few posts shy without her.
Elle, honey, you know I love you, but I disagree with your methods. As irritating as it is when people post in text-speak, why not just give them a friendly reminder that TK posters appreciate proper spelling and grammar, and leave it at that? I certainly wouldn't view it as a sign of goodwill if someone quoted and corrected my posts.
Also, did you know there is a whole field of study called Linguistics? Linguists are interested in why variants in language use happen, rather than just what's correct.

I think that textspeak also kills kittens. It kills the cutest ones when it is on purpose and not recognized as idiotic.

See, it started like that. I think it did, at least. I was nice to her. I said "it makes you look unintelligent, and I'm sure you're not". I considered that a gentle, friendly, nudge.
But then she just kept responding, and soon I was having too much fun to worry about it.
I confess to being something of a language purist. No matter what the experts are saying now, I still refuse to split infinitives or end sentences with prepositions. To me, linguistics is most valuable in the study of idiomatic expressions, like the difference between "standing in line" used in most of the US, and "standing on line" used in some northeastern states.
Of course, I am of the mind that it's not my job to teach people how to write. If I'm ever in the running for a job and that person is putting in a resume as well, I figure I'll be quite a bit ahead in the game. It will make me look even better. So I'm all about letting people have their grammar mistakes and claim that it doesn't matter.
I'm also all about letting people leave their Facebook pages public with horribly-written status updates and drunk duckface photos in their albums. Again- I hope those are the people I compete against for employment. I'm going to look like hardcore awesomesauce.
[QUOTE]I do think it's rude to quote and correct people's spelling. A simple "Can you please type in full words and not in text speak? It's difficult to read and makes me think you are 12" would have been better. Of course, I am of the mind that it's not my job to teach people how to write. I don't think it's my job, either, but it is fun for me. I don't know... Grammar makes me happy.
Life is good today.
I don't understand how people like that THINK that they are coming across as legible. She didn't seem to be too level headed though. Nice entertainment, but time to add another person to the scary-future-of-the-human-race pot.
