NWR - money savin' tips for someday baby

So, this is baby-related but I thought I'd share.

Many of our friends are having children and I've gained some valuable advice from them that we are using now.

Obviously many people know that diapers are spendy and you go through a ton - but I didn't realize how many!!

15-20/day for newborns (1 month) = 450 on the low end
+ 6-10/day for infants ... etc... etc....

That's a TON of diapers. SOOOO... I heard a great piece of advice from a coupon-savvy friend. When she was married, they started clipping coupons for diapers and buying them on the double-coupon days at the store. They stocked up on diapers and when it came time for the little one they had more than enough at a cheap price.

Just a little advice being that we're all getting to that time soon enough! Better earlier than later. :)

So, not only is our 3rd bedroom a wedding warzone, but also becoming a fortress of diapers hahaha. (I can imagine the shock of the first person that looks in there and the questions we'll get). haha.

I'd be wary of getting too many diapers.  You don't know which will work for your kid.

My sister (and we will eventually too) is cloth diapering their kiddo.  They spent about $300 up front to buy the diapers but my nephew is now 3 and a half months old and they've broken even on their investment if they'd purchased disposables and they're done having to buy them.  They still use disposables if they're going somewhere that it isn't convenient to carry used diapers, etc. but they're saving an insane amount of money even if you factor in the cost of doing extra laundry.

They'll likely have to replace some between kids but the average kid blows through a couple grand worth of disposable diapers in ther life before potty training so they're coming out VERY far ahead (plus there are all sorts of benefits to cloth diapering like less diaper rash, minimal risk of chemical burns - yes, chemical burns- and kids who are cloth diapered may actually potty train faster!)  lol - not that I've researched this or anything.  :-P

I've been doing research also!!! I was a cloth diaper baby (along with my 3 siblings).  I am not sure how FI will feel about this but I need to do as much research as possible before brining it up...I am all for this.

We were all cloth diapered too!  The ones my sister got are seriously cool.  They're one size fits all and have a series of snaps to size them up and down length AND width wise so one set of diapers will carry you from newborn size up to toddler.  They're stinkin' cute too!  Honestly, if you can change a disposable diaper, you can change the all in ones - it is just snaps instead of sticky tape or velcro.

You should PM me the website or place that your sister gets them from.  I have been looking online and such, but I have not actually punched in the number or figured out what exactly what I would need.  I figured I shouldn't worry about this stuff until after the wedding :)  I am such a pre planner though.  At least I can have a list of suggestions for when it is time to start looking further into this.

Not the thread jack but I have a friend that is obsessed with cloth diapers. She works PT at a baby store in Andover (My Bamboo Baby) they may have other locations I can't remember if it was a brand new or just a new location.

Anyway she swears by SoftBums Cloth Diapers,

It's good to think ahead, but honestly, some diapers work for some baby bodies, some don't. If your baby has thick thighs they might do better in a different brand, etc. Or they might grow super fast and leave you with a pile of unused diapers (which can always be donated to a food bank - they'll always be needed there). I'm planning on mostly cloth diapering, but I don't begrudge anyone for going the disposable route. Since newborns go through the most diapers, I'd make sure your stockpile includes mostly newborn diapers and then see as you go once baby no. 1 comes along.

Tegdirb, I have spent a boatload of time researching cloth diapers - it was super confusing at first but here are some links I liked from a blogger who is super passionate about CD: http://alphamom.com/tag/cloth-diapers/. She breaks down what you need for what age, the differences between the types, where to buy, etc. I've heard really good things about Fuzzibunz (all-in-ones) and Thirsties (traditional diaper covers with cloth inserts).

WOW! I didn't know this would get so much feedback!!! :) YES! Newborn diapers are what we're doing right now. Cloth diapers do interest me but I've heard varying things about them. I really like the idea though! I'm a big believe in recycling... the green movement and of course cost-saving. Thanks for the link Shan! I'll look into that too. :) You ladies rock. What will I do w/o you in 2 months?!
