Centerpiece Question (rambling)

So, my budget is pretty small.  My parents are graciously paying for our venue, but FI and I are paying for the rest.  I'm paying for the flowers.  I was trying to come up with ideas for reception table centerpieces, thought maybe I could make some decorations, etc.  But I just spent about an hour and a half making paper flowers and I don't think it's going to be worth the trouble to continue.  SO, getting to the point, do you all think it would look okay to do maybe half the table centerpieces a little larger/half smaller with real flowers (saving some money possibly), or do they all need to be the same?  We aren't doing a seating arrangement.  Also, anyone have any centerpiece ideas?  Sorry this is a rambling post, trying to get my head straight but too much wedding planning in there!

Re: Centerpiece Question (rambling)

  • I definitely don't think they need to be the same! Making them different adds some interest to them. However, I would suggest keeping at least SOME of the same elements in all of the centerpieces so that they flow together (e.g. if you're going to do real flowers on some, maybe still include a few paper flower, or vice-versa?) I'm not sure exactly how you would make this work...you would probably need to play with the look. OR, maybe you could add a third element that would tie them all together...say, tea-light candles, for example?

For an alternative idea, I saw this centerpiece on SMP today and thought it was a great, simple idea. I really don't think you would even need to use that many bottles/vases. I think 3-4 would be great, and you only need a few flowers per bottle which would make it pretty cost-effective. (You could easily buy some wildflowers at a wholesale store and have a friend help to set these up.) http://www.stylemepretty.com/gallery/picture/585912

  • If you are wanting to do real flowers, look into Sam's Club and Costco.  I'm getting calla lillies from Sam's Club (they have fantastic reviews!) for super cheap.  I bought my vases at Dollar Tree.  Also, the link that PP posted is super cute and looks like it would be pretty easy depending on how many tables you have/bottles you would need.  I've also seen no flowers and floating candles in a fish bowl type of vase for centerpieces.  I bought floating candles from quick candles as they were the best price I found.  I am doing submerged calla lillies with floating candles.

  • I also think have different centerpieces is okay. I think mixing it up is neat. The only reason I am having all the same centerpieces is because I found them on craigslist for a good deal.

  • There are always ways to do centrepieces that don't involve a ton of flowers, therefore helping to cut back on that budget.

Here's what I'm doing with mine. There are only 2 flowers in every centrepiece, and they are silks. These are bad cell pics of my mockup, and the petals are dollarstore because they were cheap and easy to see if this is what I wanted, now I'll buy nicer ones :)

I could not justify spending a crazy amount of money on flowers there were going to die the next day so I went a different route. When I was researching my vendor I found pictures someone uploaded to facebook from their wedding there that had these beautiful candle holders. I feel in love and was so surprised they were affordable. They actually are larger then they look in the pic. Here is the link

  • I'm not even using flowers in my centerpieces - I just couldn't spend $55/table with 19 tables. It's seemed like so much money that we will litterally just toss afterwards (and I'm not a big flower person).

This is what we are doing...

All together each centerpiece cost about about $15 with all the details.
I'm also contemplating adding a table runner using the aisle runner I purchased (and can't use at the church). I am going to use the iron-on transfer sheets to add our monogram/date to each one. (**pratying I have time to get it all done!**)
    This is the runner pattern:

  • Going non-floral is the most cost effective.  Maybe do some paper flowers and some candles?  I don't have a picture unfortunately but I am doing royal blue table runners with a large mirror tile (provided by venue) and 4 varied wine glasses on each table.  Each wine glass will have a votive in it.  With MIchaels coupons for the candles and finding wine glasses at garage sales/thrift stores, the total cost of each centerpiece has come out to less than $4!
  • I am doing half floral centerpieces and half non-floral (with candles as the focus on those).  This helped me to cut my floral budget in half and I think it will help add some variety and interest to the room.  The common aspect of the two will be gold (one of my colors) so they look somewhat cohesive- the floral arrangements will be on tall gold pedastal things with gold votives around the bottom to fill in table space, while the other half of the tables will have a gold fleur de lis table decoration (part of my theme since I am getting married in New Orleans) surrounded by taller gold candles.  I think as long as your two types of centerpieces complement each other or maintain a theme or look, you will be fine.  Or even if you keep it simple like flowers on some and candle arrangements or a few floating flowers on the other tables.  Maybe your florist can give you some ideas about what to do on the other tables so it all looks nice.

  • Thanks everyone, for your ideas!  It is so helpful to see what other people are doing!  I met with the florist for the first time a couple of days ago, and discussed some simple centerpiece ideas.  I think I'll do half of the tables with some flowers and half with other things (candles, etc.).  I'm still waiting on him to price everything out, though. I might just do one bouquet of the paper flowers I was making for a little table, like the guest book table or something.
