Getting in Shape

1/2 marathon

Has anyone had any success stories with getting into running and completing half marathon?  How long did it take for you to build up to doing the race?  I've run off and on for a couple years, usually just 3-4 miles, I'd love to finish one before my Febuary 16 wedding.  There is one in October which may be kind of soon and another right at the beginning of February (hopefully if I have to wait for this one I can fit it in with all the crazy wedding stuff going on two weeks before weddin).  Any tips or success stories would be awesome!

  • If you have a base of 3-4 miles running 3-4 days a week you can start half marathon training. The training is typically about 16 weeks, and there are a lot of training plans online. Many running stores also offer training programs or group runs. I find group runs are a great when you're starting out doing distance runs, now I prefer to do them on my own. I did my first half with Team in Training since I love the commraderie of the program, and fundraising to kick cancer in the teeth.  Another reason to consider running with a group or a fundraising program is you'll have a lot to learn about nutrition. Running 13 miles is different than running 3-4 you'll need to know what products work well with your body in order to refuel during the run.

  • I began training in May 09 and ran my first half in Sept 09.  I think you can def do by February!  And if you sign up for the October one I'm sure you'll be able to do it!  I'm running one Oct 21 and I just did my first "long" (7 mile) run this past Saturday.  It's motivation, if anything!  Do it!

  • I'm running my first in October too Rodeo! I'm about at the same spot as you...run 3-4 miles probably 5 times a week. I'm starting my (serious) training in a like 2 weeks after my HM. I'd suggest doing the October one because you probably won't want  that stress super close to your wedding.

I'd suggest the october one to see how she likes it. I actually anticipate on doing a triathlon 6 weeks before my wedding and a half marathon 1-2 weeks before my wedding next year just to keep my stress levels down. Different strokes for different folks, exercise is the one thing I have to eliminate my stress.

I'm gonna tell you that part of our team ran a 1/2 marathon after running the occasional 5k and occasionally running otherwise. We did it to prepare for the ToughMudder we were supposed to do the next week, just to see if we could make it (our Mudder turned out being 12.7 miles). I'd say, while I didn't do it in record time and hit a wall at about the 10mile mark, it felt awesome at the finish. Should we have trained a little more? Probably. But we figured we'd be sliding around in mud and doing obstacles the next week, so we didn't know exactly how much running we could do in mud while being electrocuted. :) Good luck and have fun:)!!!Smile
