Merriman's for a small group?

We are having a small group of 12 people and I'm not sure if it is worthwhile to get the cabana, which has a minimum spending of $2000...I really like the privacy of the cabana but not sure if I should spend $2000 for 12 people plus $500 for the site fee for the grassy overlook plus tax it would be around $3000 I think...I already spent way more than my budget on lodging, the wedding dress and photographer...Has anyone had a small wedding reception at Merriman's without renting the cabana? How was the experience like? Did the whole group just sit in the main dining hall? Also, I was told that if I don't rent the cabana, I can't use the event menu. Instead, the guests need to order from a la carte menu. Is there any down side of ordering from a la carte? Thanks!

  • While I didn't have my Wedding reception at Merriman's, I've eaten there several times. I did see a couple weddings while I was there. I think it comes down to cost and privacy for you. It seems pretty easy to meet the $2K minimum because everything is pricey. If I remember correctly (because I looked there for my own wedding on Maui) it was at least $75/person for dinner. If you have any appetizers and drinks you'll be at least at $100/person, probably more. If your group drinks a lot, the with tax and gratuity you might hit the minimum. The ala carte menu averaged around $48 per entree (that's on the higher end.) I did see a wedding reception in the main dining room and there was a partition put up that gave the group privacy. I think Merriman's is just a lovely place. We always make sure to go there for dinner at least once and for happy hour/sunset. If we had a group your size, we probably would've ended up there. You could also get married right on Kapalua Beach instead of paying $500 for the grassy spot. I was there a week ago and there were 3 weddings happening at sunset on e beach! Good luck!
  • Hi stephcap32! Thank you for the info! Very helpful! It is really nice to know that they would have a partition set up! The $2K minimum is before tax and gratuity though. Assume $100 per person it will only be $1200. Cake and drinks won't be more than a few hundreds I think. We will have a party later at the villa we rent so our guests probably won't drink too much at the retaurant. I love the grassy spot since I can set up a chuppah~~~ I think I should definitely check with the restaurant for a lot of details but i haven't been able to talk to them yet since they seem super busy.

  • I'm doing a dinner for 20 in the cabana.  With our group, the cabana makes sense but I could see your dilemma if you only have 12.

If it were me, though, I'd see if you could reserve outdoor seating for your party.  Who cares if others are around?  You're in maui in a wedding dress with the love of your life, you're enjoying an elegant dinner with your closest family and friends while looking at Maui sunset!  Sounds like perfection to me!

I'm sure no matter what you choose, it will be gorgeous!
