Reception venue contract question

We had picked a venue, was given an estimate on how much it would cost. But when we got the contract to look over and sign. Well it was extremely vague! No prices were on it. It said that prices were subject to change without notice. Just overall it was vague. I waiting to hear back from contact with venue with a lot of questions that I had. I just did not know if this is normal for a contract to be vague. From my understanding they are supposed to be detailed. I just don't want to be hit with a lot of last minute charges (they want a valid credit card for other charges that will occur during the event -I can understand for damages or not paying the rest of balance.) I mean charges like, 'oh well now you have to pay for the linen that was initally supposed to be included type of charges.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

No contract should be vague when it comes to pricing.  They need to list all potential charges for your event.  That protects you from being overcharged and them from being underpaid.  If they refuse to list the agreed upon final pricing, don't sign the contract and find another venue.
    ROCK IS KING!!
  • That does not sound normal at all.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I had them SPECIFICALLY write in that the prices were locked in from the 2012 rates...If it is vague, they can jump drastically on you. Be careful with that. I know we locked in, but our venue prices have jumped so I am very glad I wrote it in.

Keep in mind, itf it doesn't say it in the contract, it never happened or was agreed on. do NOT trust "we agree" verbally because the person signing the contract who is "promising" things may get fired or leave and then you are screwed. Have it in writing
  • Agree with PPs-

Make sure your contract is very specific- date, which room you will be using, when you can get into the site, when you have to be out by, everything that is included in the room rental price (tables, chairs, linens, etc.); if they have a specific wedding package- list everything that is included in that package and the cost; when payments and guest counts are due, gratuities, taxes, service charges. Be as specific as possible.  We went through 3 different venue wedding coordinators during planning of DD's wedding (it was 2 years from booking to wedding) and if it wasn't for what was in the contract, and clarifying emails on items, we would have been screwed when it came time to pay the bill.
  • Our contract was specific in regards to the price & what was included. For the food/drinks they did have packages so that allowed us to pick the food items later, but the package we picked was on the contract & was was included in contract (2 meats, one potato, one veggie to be named later). We picked out our 2 meats, one potato, etc out at a later date. But everything else was detailed in contract w/pricing.
