Wedding Invitations & Paper

Postage FML and Enclosures Question

Hi everyone, I realized I had two invite questions/issues, and figured I'd knock them out at once...

1.) We're doing DIY enclosures on colored printer paper to save costs and have a lower invite weight.  What should I include on them?  I was planning on providing the reception information, as well as the address to our wedding website.  Should I include directions?  If so, how much should I say?  Directions to ceremony?  Directions to reception?  Both?  Anything else I should put on the enclosures?

2.) Here's my bigger issue.  So, I put together an invitation to get it weighed at the post office.  86 CENTS.   WHAT.  I thought I was going to be able to get away with the 66 cent ones, but apparently not.  It's too "lumpy" apparently, which is costing me an extra 20 cents.  I'm going to see what I can do about the lumpiness.  That would solve my whole problem.

But if it doesn't...what do I pick for postage?  I'm less concerned with the cost than the fact that the ONLY 86 cent stamp usps sells right now is a puffin.  A puffin.  Sure, it's cute, but not what I'm looking for.  The only wedding-related postage is for the standard amount or 66.  I basically have 3 options: deal with the puffins and have one stamp, do the 66 cent stamp with another 20 cent one that's NWR, or pay more than I need and have 2 identical wedding stamps.  Will it look tacky to have 2 stamps on the invite?  I'm leaning towards having the 2 identical wedding stamps, versus just using the puffin.  What should I do?  What's your vote on this?

Thanks in advance for all your help.  In terms of the postage, I just don't really know what the best option is, and you all give great advice!

Honestly, I would just do the puffin.  I just looked at it on the USPS website and I like it!  Besides, no one scrutinizes the stamp that comes on an invite.  I couldn't even tell you what stamps previous invitations I've received used.

ETA: I've never heard of lumpiness costing more, usually it's weight.  What do you have in there that's causing it to be lumpy??   Also keep in mind, if it's square, that costs more to mail

The puffin isn't too bad.  I hoped to have wedding themed stamps, but I could probably let that go!

The alleged lumpiness I think is from the Response card and its envelope.  Plus there's the inner envelope.  The invitation itself is folded, which could be adding to the issue.  I'm going to try and arrange them differently in the envelope to see if that makes a difference.  It's overweight, which brings it to 66 cents, which is what I was expecting.  But since it's not perfectly smooth, that adds another 20 cents somehow.  They're rectangles too, not square.  Idk.  I'll fool around with the inside and take it back to recheck it.  If not, I'm sure the puffin would be fine!  Thanks for replying!

</div><div>It must be the folded invite.  Because we had the inner envelope, invite, tissue paper, response card, response envelope, direction card and hotel block card and we were fine.

  • No you don't need to do a puffin.

www.zazzle.com offers legally viable USPO approved stamp designs in thousands of images.

You can also upload whatever image you want.

You can do an image of a flower you're using, an abstract painting, a rolls royce, you and your fiance dressed as smurfs - whatever.

You can customize the size of the stamp (they offer three dimensions) - basically small, medium, large.

You can select a range of stamp values from .33 to over $5.00.

You can reposition the image to format the stamp vertically or horizontally.  You can change the design color, add font in a variety of styles (cursive, sans serif, etc.)
and put a small message like "Susan Loves Sam" or "RSVP by March 20" - whatever.

For that matter, you can do a matching "thank you" with stamp and card cover that are the same image, etc.

Here are some of my zazzle designs.

that's a vintage print of a color reef

that's 'Thank You' written in sand

this one is actually a design the USPO had going a while ago, a painting by Edward Hopper.

    So, no puffins!! HAHA

  • I hadn't considered custom postage!  From what I can tell, zazzle is awesome.  I'll check into that!  Thank you!
  • I used 2 different stamps on mine, 1 wedding cake and 1 of the 2 white roses. I didnt want to do that either but the cost on zazzle was INSANE to me! would have cost me double then what it was worth.
  • I had all of what you mentioned and ours was still the standard wedding stamp.

You should have the invite on the bottom. On top of that goes your inserts, from biggest to smallest, with the rsvp card tucked under the rsvp envelope flap on top. That all goes in the inner facing towards the back of the innter, and the front face of the inner faces the back of the outer.

  • I used Zazzle for my Save the date cards and used a picture they had of Ariel in a bridal gown from the Disney movie The Little Mermaid since it's going to be a beach wedding. It worked out real well and will probably use the same thing for the invites.

</div><div>This is true. I tried Zazzle, but it wasn't worth it to me. For some of mine I was able to use the 66 cent wedding cakes, but for the others I just used two of the white roses ones. It looked fine!
