DJ or Band?!

Hello again everyone! This week we're having to decide on whether we want a DJ or band. We have also toyed with the idea of putting songs we would like at our wedding on an iPod and just having that play on repeat throughout the reception.

So I was wondering...what are your thoughts on DJs vs bands? And are there any alternatives that you prefer?

Re: DJ or Band?!

  • Have you priced this all out?  A band will be much more than most DJs, which will be much more than an iPod reception.  Do you want people to dance at your reception?  If so, it's helpful to have a DJ or bandleader that can read the crowd and can transition easily to play songs for the crowd that's dancing.  A good live band can definitely add a bit of extra energy over a DJ, IMO.
  • I prefer a DJ to a band.

If you want a lot of people to dance at the reception, then an Ipod is not the way to go (from what I hear). The DJ can get people excited to dance, and make it more of a party atmosphere.

  • I personally love a live band over a DJ! Of course that depends on who you hire. :) It just seems to me that a good live band can get the crowd going way more than a guy just spinning records. I'm planning on having a band that I've seen perform a couple of times. They do a lot of contemporary country, outlaw country, rock...the lead singer jumps up on chairs and runs out into the crowd...all sorts of fun stuff! Very entertaining! And so far they've played everything I've requested of them on the spot.
When it comes to DJ's at weddings I can't stand all the cliche type stuff like "YMCA", and the like...but not my thing. :)
