Ordered my dress 2 sizes small!!! Sottero and Midgley-Lara!!

Hey everyone I am really excited to have picked a dress out this past week!! I have been consistently losing weight.... since January I am down 25 pounds! So with that in mind I decided to order my dress 2 sizes smaller than what I am now!!! I am really nervous but it's definitely keeping me motivated! I am looking to lose around 30-35 pounds and I'm 99% sure it will be too big when it arrives in August.... Has anyone else done this?? Am I crazy? :)

yes, you are absolutely crazy. If I were you, I'd call the salon back and see if you can change the size.  Even if you do succeed in losing 30-35 pounds, you have no idea where on your body those pounds will come off.  What if you lose them in your butt, but your waist and hips stay the same size?

It's a LOT easier to take a dress in than let it out.  We see dozens of brides here who do this and regret it and come here crying about how they are going to have to go buy an off the rack dress because their seamstress can't magically make a dress fit that is clearly too small.
  • Uh... yes, you're crazy. It's much, much easier to alter a dress down rather than up, and the latter is sometimes impossible. Moreover, weight does not always translate to inches.

</div><div>I would never do this.  Generally speaking, you can take a dress in two sizes.  Letting it out 2 sizes?  Good luck with that.

  • I'd say yes you're crazy. :-/

I was in a similar boat -- I had lost about 25 pounds when I found my dress, and I still had about 10 months to go at the time. I had anticipated I'd easily lose about an additional 20 pounds or so by the wedding, so I ordered my dress ONE size smaller than she measured me at.

Well, life got in the way and I didn't lose all that I had anticipated. LUCKILY, when I had my first fitting a few weeks ago, the dress DID fit me (but it was a bit snug) but I am nowhere NEAR the weight I thought I would be at by now.

I 100% agree with PP's. It's easier to take in a dress than take out. If I were in your shoes, order the dress in the size you're in NOW, and then look forward to having them take it in. You seriously don't need this kind of pressure on yourself --  I was DREADING my fitting and went to some extreme measures to try to get to a "smaller" size. I lucked out. Now I'm fighting to not gain anything between now and my wedding in 3 months.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • Please call them back and order the size they measured you for. I used to work at a bridal store and can't tell you how many times we had brides come in and think they were going to lose a ton of weight so they ordered down (against our recommendations of course) After the first 25 pounds, the body normally starts to plateau and you don't lose weight as easily (or quickly).

It is MUCH MUCH MUCH (like 1000x) easier to take a dress in than it is to take a dress out.

I really hope you don't take this the wrong way--I totally believe in you and KNOW you can get to your goal weight. I would just hate to see you have something happen and end up not fitting in your dream dress :(

  • I lost 40lbs between ordering my dress and my first fitting. My boobs stayed the same size, if I had ordered my dress smaller it would not have fit.

  • You should also order your shoes two sizes smaller, right?

This.  Think about it, Kim Kardashian could lose 30-35 pounds but she would still have that huge butt.  Just because you lose weight does not mean your body structure changes.  If you have big hips losing fat is not going to make your bone structure change.

I would call the salon and see if you can get the size changed.  It is never a good thing to order a dress smaller then what is recommended.  Just ask my best friend.  She hated to think she had to order a size 14 so she ordered a 12 to make herself feel better.  Guess what?  The dress didn't fit and they had to rush to find her another one.  Thankfully her bridal salon was very accommodating.  Just think if they werent?
