Wedding Invitations & Paper

Inner/Outer on the way out?

I've spent the last 24 hours looking at invitations, and I'm truly shocked how many websites do not offer inner envelopes...especially some really nice stationery sources. Are inner and outer envelopes becoming a thing of the past? I finally settled on a design, but the company doesn't offer inner envelopes!

Re: Inner/Outer on the way out?

  • I think they are still popular for more formal weddings, but with everyone trying to cut costs where they can, not having the inner envelope is a simple way to do it w/o affecting the wedding itself.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I've been to some pretty formal weddings, and I've never gotten an inner envelope. Recently the really fancy weddings have had elaborate pocketfolds.

  • My invites have an inner envelope. After addressing 111 of them, I wish they didn't it. We are not having a "formal" wedding, but it's not informal either. Our stationary is on nice paper with a silver border and silver writing. Very plain. All of the invites I looked at locally had inner envelopes, but I noticed a lot online did not. I personally think big pocketfold invite = fancy wedding.

  • We are just starting to look at invites for our wedding. I also noticed that inner envelopes seem to be less "popular". We liked the idea of the pocketfold invites to keep everything organized but they definitely seem more expensive.

  • Am I the only one that thinks pocketfolds look a little too 'home-made'? I just don't really get the 'formal' vibe from them.

My name is Ophelia, and I have my judgy pants on.

OP, William Arthur still offers them! I believe they're included in the price, but can't remember. That's what we went with.

  • The inner envelopes and pocket folds also increase your postage. I was glad not to have them.

Meh, I think it depends on the quality of workmanship put into them.

My pocketfolds were home-made, but certainly looked just as professional as if they were done by a print shop.

    Yes they do.

  • We didn't do inner envelopes. I don't think I've received a wedding invitaiton in the last five years that used inner envelopes. I think that they are indeed becoming less common.
  • We kept it more traditional and used the inner envelopes. I'm not a fan of the pocketfolds. They can look nice, but I just prefer the traditional over trendy.
  • I actually had to order the outer envelopes separate since the invitation didn't come with both. While I'm not exactly following "etiquette" with parts of my wedding, I didn't want to have to write "and guest" or "and family" on the outer envelope.

It really is a personal preference...but there's less of a chance for the invitation to get damaged..extra layer. :)
