Themed wedding

Hello Everyone,

We are having an Art Deco Glamour themed wedding and would like to encourage our guest to dress from the 1920's -1930's art deco/hollywood galmour era. This is not going to be a traditional wedding.

We are not having a large wedding, family and close friends. These are party themed  people and enjoy these kinds of events
The venue is a historic Art Deco Theater.

I need help wording this request or should i just use word of mouth?
I want to word it so that it is a request and would make the themed wedding so much more fun. But also want our guest not to feel pressured to dress from that era, at the same time letting them know that their attire should be at least semi formal.


We ballroom dance, (that is how we met), so I know that most of my friends and some family do have something they can wear.

PLEASE HELP !!!

    Your questions seem to be more aimed on the etiquette side, so perhaps those ladies can help you a little better from here on out. You can't dictate what anyone wears to your wedding. They're adults. That being said, word of mouth truly goes a long ways. My friend JUST had a 20's/Gatsby themed wedding and just by telling me that, I knew what to wear. There was nothing dictated on the invite (it's technically against etiquette).

    So I would suggest spreading by word of mouth, and what an awesome theme! :)

    Yeah.  Not on your invitation.

    If you absolutely HAVE to let people know, I guess I'd go word of mouth.  "Yes, we're doing this 20s-30s Art Deco theme!"  Then perhaps the other party brings up that they have the perfect costume to wear.  "Oh!  You can definitely wear it, that would be so much fun!"

    But you can't tell your guests how to dress, and the invitation is not an appropriate place for attire unless it's a true black tie event.

    I feel the same. I'm not a fan of themed weddings.

    All the responses make me sad because I love dressing up for events and people get excited to come to them dressed up....I had a 20s party that people got hair cuts for and ordered special outfits. But, to put it into the bigger picture, I'm quite certain that of the 75 folks on my invite list right now, maybe 30 would participate with enthusiasm and the others would probably just ignore it.

    If you do want to drop the attire suggestion for guests and have some 20s elements, I did an absolute ton of research several years ago. I did a 20s Murder Mystery party and I tried to get things pretty close to accurate details. I hired dance instructors to teach my guests the Charleston and other period dances. My menues matched those from actual 20s menus from real restuarants. I only had alcohol available from the period.

    I could totally see people having fun with a photo booth, you could have boas and big string pearls and hats!
