Block Island, RI

Hello!

Is Block Island open/functioning in October? We are thinking of something small and quiet for a honeymoon getaway (we live in northern NJ)

FI has suggested Block Island. I think it could be nice, I just don't know much about it and don't know if it is a seasonal location. We have also been discussing Newport - would it be possible to do 3 nights in Newport and then 2 on Block Island?

Thanks!!

Edit: Our wedding is October 12, but we would consider leaving Thursday, the 17th due to work schedules.

Re: Block Island, RI

  • Block Island usually is running during tourist season until about the end of August and then they start shutting shops and some things down. I would check the website for more information.

  • Not sure about BI but Newport would be lovely that time of year!
  • I would assume most of the shops/restuarants would be shut down or not open every day. Plus the ferry schedule decreases significantly after the high season.

I LOVE Block Island, but most of the activities and places to go are "summery". Hanging out at Ballards Beach, getting drinks and dancing to the live music on the patio at Ballards, renting jet skis, parasailing, renting bikes/mopeds (might be too chilly in October), getting mudslides at Trader Vics, boating, etc..

I like pp's idea of looking into Newport instead. Everything should be open there, and the foliage would be beautiful. Plus you can take a side trip into CT to go to Mystic and/or the casinos.
  • Block Island tends to shut down completely after Columbus Day.  There will be a few B&B's open, but not too many shops or restaurants.

We spent 3 days in Newport after our wedding for our minimoon and it was great. Check out my blog posts below for some ideas of what to do in the area, and feel free to PM me if oyu have any questions!

Go to Newport. Block Island is accessible with restricted ferry schedule and very few places open in October. Newport is always open :)

If you choose Newport you can easily go to Block Island for a day and ride a bike around the island if its nice out. I did this last May and it was nice, because their were no tourists and you could still get the experience of the island's natural beauty. Rhode Island is very small, so you could see the whole state no matter where you stay.
