Travel Booking

Did you book your Honeymoon:

1)Directly through the airline and hotel?
2)Through a travel site like Expedia, Travelocity, etc?
3)Through a travel agent?

I've been looking through Expedia and checking out Tripadvisor and the actual hotel websites but we're wondering if a Travel Agent would give us better prices?(we've never used one)

Re: Travel Booking

  • expedia etc.. are online TAs.
but why not get a quote from a local TA to compare? ask family and friends for a recommendation.
i dont use a TA for most of my trips but I have used her for some. she can do the same or better as online and if it's the same i'd rather give the commission to someone i kow that a faceless website you know? we travel pretty frequently so it adds up quickly.

  • I know CMGr isn't around because of her cruise but she would point out that Expedia is a travel agency! It's just that instead of dealing with a human, you deal with an internet interface!

I think it depends on your budget and where you want to go if you should use a travel agent. I also depends on how comfortable you arewith planning trips and how well traveled you are. There are certain destinations that I would never attempt to book on my own if I had never been. Tahiti comes to mind- too many nuiances with flights, too many islands to choose from, etc. It helps to speak with a specialist for that type of trip. If you have traveled before and had success booking on your own (and are comfortable doing so),you may find it easier to just do it yourself. Good travel agents will meet or beat a price from Expedia or another online agency, so you can pretty much always get the best price with an agent, but sometimes it's not worth the time to involve another person, or if your budget is only $1000 and you want to just go to FL, it's easier to just get everything arranged through deals you find online.

  • Thanks ladies. I've always just booked our travel on my own, wherever I found the best prices online. But we are thinking about going to Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica which involves a domestic flight from the main airport in San Juan. I found 2 local airlines through the hotel website that have those flights, but I'm just nervous about booking the bulk of the travel through Expedia and then the domestic flights separately. We've been wanting to go see the travel agency in town but of course their business hours are the same as our working hours. I have this Friday off though so I think I'll just make an appointment to go without FI.

  • There are a few girls on here who have been to Costa Rica. Perhaps they can share their experience or recommend an agent. I know that having all of your package rolled up into one is beneficial if something were to go wrong. You could, though, just purchase trip insurance at insuremytrip.com (not expedia as it wouldn't cover those domestic flights) and if something goes wrong, you can invoke your policy.

  • I have always just booked my own travel, but we used AAA for our HM, because we were going to three different islands, renting a car at each place, wanted insurance, etc. So it was easier to just have someone else figure all that out. It doesn't cost anything to have a TA give you possible itineraries & prices, so why not see what they can do for you?

<div>Ive done this numerous times, but not necessarily through Expedia.  Last summer, we booked Vayama to Istanbul, but booked our flights to Izmir separately, and then booked flights to Bucharest separately too (and back to Istanbul) with local airlines (Turkish Air in Turkey-my fave airline EVER, and some local Romanian airline-Tarom-in Romania).  It always seems to work ok for us that way, but it can be more challenging if your first leg is delayed and your in country flights aren't booked together.  But, it's something I would do any day.</div>
  • you dont have to take a domestic flight to MA. it's about a 2 hour drive.

  • I used a travel agent because I didn't want to do all of the fare comparisons and preliminary checking around. I told her the days and the destination, she came back with hotels and price points. Super easy!
