FYI-- Watertown, MA residents and surrounding neighborhoods on lockdown

One suspect caught and killed after shootout with police, one suspect still at large - armed and dangerous.(<clicky).

No public transit service at all today in Boston (no T, no bus service, no trains) until further notice.

  • I've been glued to the tv since 4:45 am. It's so crazy.

  • All of my love is going to Boston right now.  Syd, are you in a lockdown zone?

  • I work in Concord, which is far enough west to not be included in the lock down... But every single tv is on the news at work right now, it's still nerve wracking. I saw three police cars race down route 2 on my way to work this morning. I seriously hope they catch the guy soon!!!!

  • No, I'm about 35 min NW of Boston, but got up really early for some reason.

I was just putting it out there because I know several ladies here are closer to the city and the fact that there isn't any public transport into the city makes a huge difference for people.

An MIT officer was killed in the crossfire early this AM, and another man was held hostage.

In all seriousness, there WILL eventually be a movie about this and I think that profits should be given to the One fund (click).

  • As a cop's daughter, hearing of first responders having to race into danger like this makes me sick. I'm watching coverage on my computer right now and trying to hold it together. I can't even imagine what those in Boston are feeling right now, especially the people in the lockdown/evacuation areas. I'm praying no one else - except maybe the suspect himself - is injured in this senselessness.

[QUOTE]I'm watching NBC. They just had someone call in who went to high school with the younger suspect. She said he seemed like a normal, social kid who had friends and was on the wrestling team.  I do not understand the world.

I'm watching a Boston CBS feed and they are showing an interview with the uncle. He doesn't understand much English and he is clearly confused by the reporter's questions in addition to trying to make sense of things.

Personally, I've gotten the impression (from what has been broadcast so far) that the first suspect - the older brother who is dead - was sort of the ringleader and perhaps convinced the brother to go along with it? Idk, but all reactions thus far seem to point to surprise at the younger brother's involvement.
  • I just moved last year out of the town next to Watertown, and my H worked in Watertown itself at that time. I have many friends in both towns, as well as Boston. This is horrible and terrifying.
  • I woke up at 3:00 for some reason, went downstairs to watch TV and was shocked at what was going on.  Stay safe Bostonians.

  • Outside the lockdown area, but my dad and sister are in them right now (not Watertown though).  Scary stuff.
  • My assistant is on lockdown. I guess she can't leave the house. She said it's surreall to have such extreme quiet in a place that is bustling and she is terrified because her brother (who she lives with) is gone today.

People should not be terrified on their streets or home. This week is just too much.

  • It's so crazy.  Syd, I've been thinking since Monday that this has felt like a James Patterson novel.  I'm sure there will be a movie one day.  It's so unreal.  My dh works in Boston and got a few calls this morning to work from home.  The T is shut down anyway, so he would have had to drive if he had to go in.  I just hope and pray that no one else gets hurt.
  • Take it at face value because its Facebook, but I have a friend listening to the police scanner who is reporting that police have an older man cuffed/in custody that has a switch and an explosive of some sort...
  • Please don't listen to a thing CNN is saying. They've posted so many things that are false this morning. I'm listening to the police scanner. They've asked that people not post information from the scanner to social media encase the suspect is watching the internet.

The suspect could be watching the Internet, so don't post anything... but he can't himself, then, be listening to the scanner?

My friend is listening here in the Chicago suburbs via a webpage...
  • Yeah this week, CNN fails. I saw stuff on people's facebook on Monday, checked the news first and saw that CNN did announce various things... and later, that they apprehended the suspect...etc.. all retractions.

There was a list of all the things they reported earlier this week going around up here showing just how many things that were wrong including the amount of bombs found and the fact that cell service was not shut down, it was just overwhelmed on the day of the marathon etc...

  • http://www.wbur.org/ is posting good updates and information about the situation. I know it seems strange that the scanner is available online, but they have multiple channels and only one is available as far as I can tell to be listened to. Plus, it is possible the suspect could have a mobile phone that can go on twitter or facebook, but he isn't going to listen to something with sound for fear of being caught.
  • CNN has been overly cautious from what I've been listening to/watching this morning.  They're also the only feed that's been reliable as far as not going in and out this morning.

I hope this is all over soon. :(

Do you ever read the posts on news feeds? They are awful. I hope this is not an accurate sample of how Americans actually think.

Comments I've seen talk about detailed ways to torture them, how non-white people should vacate the country, how it's a good thing it wasn't a black man, how the bombings were obviously jokes, how we must not have treated these individuals with respect and that's why they did this...

WTF... there's so many comments from so many sources like this that it's sickening...

  • Watching the uncle give an interview and my heart hurts for him. He is being accosted by these reporters and he is doing his best to give answers, and you can tell he is not only confused and frustrated but agitated at some of the implications of the questions he's being asked. One reporter just said, "We'll, what do YOU think of the United States. How do you feel about this country?" Seriously?! He is doing his best to provide information and cooperate - stop implying that he is some extremist immigrant who hates the U.S. ugh.

I have family locked down in Newton, and I just found out my cousin is locked down in her dorm in Boston and they've run out of food. Not a big deal considering what happened, but I hope they take care of them soon.

    ETA to fix the tone
  • Well they just lifted the lock down, so that's good at least.

  • Well just about as soon as they lived the lock down, stuff started going down in Watertown again. I'd highly suggest anyone in the area to stay indoors- they have a certain street surrouned and are checking into a suspicious situation after some gun fire.
  • Crazy!  This is insane...  So ready for this whole thing to be over.  I really hope everyone in that neighborhood and the police there stay safe!
  • I hope it is him.  I just hope it is all over soon and that they get him alive with no more harm to any police.
