Reception time

My daughter's wedding ceremony at the church will start at 3:30.  Will last till 4::00.  The reception is a half an hour  drive from church.  What time should reception start?  Maybe 5:00?

<div>4:30.  There shouldn't be any break between ceremony and reception other than drive time.</div><div>
</div><div>If the couple will be finishing pictures or otherwise not right there, do a cocktail hour at the start of the reception.  </div>

</div><div>Ditto.  4:30 is perfect.  As a guest, I'd hate to have to sit out in my car in the parking lot for a half hour.  Have a cocktail hour, then go into the reception.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Yes, 4:30. Even if the drive to get there will take 1/2 an hour, you should still have it start immediately in case it DOESN'T take someone 1/2 an hour to make the drive.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Yep.  I agree with everyone else.  Host cocktail time beginning at 4:30 when the guests will start to arrive.
  • 30mins seems very short for a church ceremony... plus your guests will then have to make their way out the church and then inevitably hang around to take pictures etc... before making their way to their car. I know I'm going against everyone else, but a 4:30 start doesn't really allow for any delays. What if the ceremony doesnt start right at 3:30, and then doesnt last exactly 30mins, and then guests don't get straight in their car and head straight to the reception without hitting traffic - cocktail hours are usually th emost expensive hour of open bar (if you're having open bar) If it were me, I'd want to make sure evryone was there to appreciate it and the food ... I'd look at closer to 5pm

</div><div>So the guests that dawdle around will be there for cocktail hour, but the guests that are prompt can sit in their car or stand around and wait for you to get around to hosting them?  So rude!</div><div>
</div><div>Cocktail hour is designed to make sense for people to be arriving as it goes.  People shouldn't have to wait around for everyone to get there for cocktail hour to start.

<div>Im not saying the delays will be due to dawdling - I'm just saying that delays are inevitable. Just putting another opinion out there. </div>
