Dessert only?

Hi ladies! What do you think about doing a dessert bar and coffee instead of a full meal for the reception? I would have the ceremony after lunch, around 2pm and then the reception would be before dinner? Is that weird?

(This will be in the winter, so hot drinks will work.)

Re: Dessert only?

  • This probably isn't going to be a popular opinion but I really don't get dessert receptions.  I love sweets but there is a limit to the amount of sweets someone can eat at any point in the day.  Even worse at 2 in the afternoon. Because then you're sick for the rest of the day.  Make sure there are plenty of other non sweet options like veggie trays, fruits, cheeses etc.

  • You're fine etiquette wise, but I also find the concept kind of odd.
  • It's fine. Back when our grandmothers wedded, they did cake and coffee, plus an occasional finger sandwich. I second hoboken's idea to have some savory finger food as well.
  • I would at least add some appetizers or a cheese plate. I'm not crazy about dessert receptions. I've never been to one, and I think I'd be a little disappointed if I was.
  • my best friend had a dessert only reception several years ago.  They had a TON of cake and pies left over because most people only ate one piece of dessert.  I also second having non sweet items available.
  • I have been several wedings where the reception is a dessert buffet.   I strongly recommend having a cheese plate as part of the buffet for your guests with sugar issues or outright diabetes.   The only time I saw any problems was when the invitations did not identify that there was a dessert buffet  to follow.   These invitation said reception to follow and people mistakenly believe they were getting dinner.  It is very, very neccessary to clearly indicate that you are hosing a dessert buffet to follow.
  • as long as it's done by 4 or so it's fine. i would also consider adding some savory things too-i wont have more than 1 piece of pie (I'm not a cake fan). some fruit, veggies etc.. for those of us who dotn want to stuff our face with empty calories all afternoon :) i'm kind of kidding and kind of not all at the same time

  • In addition to the recommendation that you have a veggie plate or the like, I'd also recommend a cold drink option.  Dessert makes me thirsty, and coffee doesn't quench it for me! Ice water in a nice pitcher is okay, but a yummy homemade punch is a great touch!
