Budget Friendly Reception Ideas

A very dear friend of mine is getting married. (I'm so excited for her.)

My friend and her FI both have very large families and their guest lists maybe about 150 or more. I don't think that they are able to cut the guest list. So, are there any budget friendly reception ideas I could mention to her? Have any brides/grooms been in the situation of inviting large families and were able to keep the costs down without trimming the guest list?

Re: Budget Friendly Reception Ideas

  • Get married at a non-meal time and have a cake/punch/cheese/veggie tray reception. Don't have favors. Get married on a Friday or Sunday. Keep the bridal party smaller to cut back on rehearsal dinner costs, gift costs, etc.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

We had a morning ceremony (11:00) followed by a lunch reception (until 3:30).

I wasn't on a "budget" per se, but it ended up being very cost effective.

These are really great ideas, and I'll definitely pass them along to her.

Another option, I wanted to mention to my friend is hosting a cocktail reception instead of a dinner reception. What would be the best time to start the ceremony and reception if she was hosting cocktail style with h'orderves and drinks?
  • I'd say probably 8 PM if she wants a party atmosphere. I looked into doing a cocktail reception and the h'orderves ended up being almost as expensive as a buffet, so we just went with a buffet.

This is a great point. If you're offering drinks, you also need to have enough food (and a variety of it) to satisfy guests no matter what the time of day. Those trays of meatballs, mozzarella sticks, mini quiches, bruschetta, shrimp, etc, etc, really add up!
