Wedding Woes

Hemlock Grove

Is anyone watching?

I'm on episode 5, I think.

Side note: if you're interested, DON'T go read the cast list Netflix has.  It's not a cast list, it's a character list and it contains spoilers, which was irritating.  I only read it on one, but it's kind of a key point, so I ruined it accidentally.

Re: Hemlock Grove

  • They were talking about this on NPR.  That is the closest I have/will get.

  • I want to but I've been too tired at night to watch.
  • Well, I'll give my thoughts so far.

This is giving off a HUGE Twin Peaks vibe.  Weird high school murders, town that is just a bit off, weird parental figure-child relationship, agent coming in from outside legal agency that has suspect motives, same style of music usage and general ambiance of weirdness.

    Then add monsters.

It also has one of the disburbing, gory, unique and incredible werewolf changes I've ever seen in any film medium.  It was revolting and fascinating at the same time.  Even DH was riveted by it, while saying, Gross, gross, gross.  IDK if it was makeup or CG or what, but it was fantastic.

So far, I'm loving the Shelley character (a high school girl who is a ripoff of Frankenstein and wonderfully named Shelley).  The rest of it...well, I'm not driven to watch, but it's interesting and teh production quality is high.
  • I guess they've posted the scene for viewing if you're curious.  But I'm not lying, it's gross and brutal.  It's just that it's completely fascinating:

  • I want to watch. We just haven't had time. Maybe this weekend. Eli Roth is right up my alley.
  • We watched the first two episodes.  FI, who's go NO idea what Twilight's about could only say "Man, this is just like it, huh?"

He LOVED the special effects for that one scene (I couldn't watch all of it...I got grossed out).

Granted, he thought it was the "BEST SERIES EVER" in the first 30 seconds with the ta-tas.  But, as we kept watching, we weren't impressed.

You can't hear the actors who seem to mumble, and...it's just not our bag really.
  • I know what you're saying, shayla.  Part of me wants to quit watching it. I  don't really find most of the characters engrossing and the plot is taking a long time to really get started.  But then i find myself just hitting Play to see what happens next.  Everytime I think I'm out, I start wondering what are the eyedrops?  What is an upir really?  Who is the vargul?  What is this business with the White Tower?  Why does Famke's character always wear white?!?!

There is a lot of blood and sex, I'll say that.
  • So, I went to google Hemlock Grove, just to see if anything was being buzzed about yet.

This post is already on the front page of that search, only about 5 down.

    That's....weird and scary.

I'm watching it. I think I'm at episode 8? Mostly watching at this point because I want to know how everything ends up.

FI watched half an episode with me, thought it was ridiculous, and has teased me ever since (but he teases me for liking Once Upon a Time, so I'm used to it).

Update: I finished watching it last night. Won't give anything away, but I sat there for 10 minutes afterwards thinking WTF was that?

I dreamed about that damn dead girl for 2 nights. The creepy blonde one? Yeah. I can't stop watching it. I think we're on episode 8 or maybe 9.
  • I finished it as well.  Honestly, I went and read some article about it and the comments section enlightened me more than the actual show.

It was okay to watch for a weekend, but I'm not sure I'd watch Season 2.  The production value was great, Netflix is doing a good job.

I read a review that said there was Twilight bad (it's bad, but thinks it's good) and Healthers bad (it's bad, knows it and does a wink-wink-nudge-nudge about it to the viewers).  Hemlock Grove, the reviewer says, is Heathers bad.  I agree.
