Nwr: generic birth control pills

I've been on LoEstrin 24fe for 8 years now. I just switched health insurance and now this pill went from 30 a month on my old plan to over 90 a month on my current plan. I really can't afford to continue taking this, as if I were to switch to a generic it would be free. I guess my question is, has anyone ever taken a generic birth control pill? Are the just as good? Will it cause any changes in my body since I was on LoEstrin for so long? I have only been on this one brand so I'm just nervous about switching and could use some help. Thanks!

Re: Nwr: generic birth control pills

  • I've almost always taken a generic -  I took a generic when I first started the pill because I've always gotten generics for free with my insurance. When I switched to Seasonique, I was on it for about 2 years before they released the generic form (Amethia). There's no difference at all in the two pills - I've even switched back and forth, generic one round and name back the next, then back, when I've gotten a sample from my gyn.

  • That's good to hear, thanks for responding! Makes me feel a little better about switching to the generic of LoEstrin.

I'm on the generic version of my bc pill. If you are at all concerned, you should talk to your gynecologist about it. The generic that I'm currently on recently got bumped by my insurance company to the next "price tier" making it much more expensive for me as well. I plan to discuss with my doctor new options since many generics are available.

  • I have been on a generic version for awhile now and never have noticed a difference.
  • <div>My advice to you as a health professional talk to your doctor before you switch to the generic brand. Everybody is different it may for some people but not you. Do not make any decision without first consult with your doctor.</div><div>

  • I'm on the same pill.  When my insurance changed about 2 years ago the pharmacy price also went from 30 to 90 bucks a month.  I did the mail RX thing for a while.  When I went to my dr a few months ago I tried switching to generic and I was having issues.  I just went back to doing the mail order prescription which is $50 for a 3 month supply.

  • I'm on the generic form of Yaz... I've been on it for a while and never noticed a difference when I switched.
  • My doctor gave me about 6 months of samples of loestrin 24. After that I switched to the generic brand Junel and I haven't noticed much of a difference at all.
  • I would talk to your dr about it. I was on yaz for a while, then when I brought the new rx from my annual to CVS they autmatically filled it with the generic. With my insurance Yaz was on an approved list and the generic wasn't, so the generic cost more than the Yaz, I was really pissed that CVS would do that, but that's beside the point. I did not do well on the generic AT ALL. My mood was all over the place, and I was depressed. I had CVS switch back to Yaz and noticed I became myself again.
