What's up?

Happy April everyone! What is everyone up to today?

H got his first acceptance into law school, and was offered a merit scholariship. I'm getting excited for this new chapter of our life, and am getting VERY excited for it to be over so we can move onto the next chapter...buying a house and having a baby!

How's everyone else doing?

  • That's so exciting, Resa!

Nothing new for me. Just trying to finish up all my content and start reviewing for the state test. And after that, there's only a month left in the school year!

  • That's so exciting, Resa!

I just finished my spring break, which means it's time to kick school into high gear and start looking for summer jobs. Meanwhile, FI is still looking for a house that's in our budget and not in a crack neighborhood. I wish it was summer. I have so many great plans for summer.

  • Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah! *bear hug* Congrats to your hubby, Resa!! That is sooo exciting! I've also known looots of people who end up having a baby (well, their wives) during 3rd year of law school, just sayin'. Wink

C is on sleep strike or something over here. She slept terribly last night (teething, I think) and has been delaying her morning nap the last week or so. It's okay, as long as she's not grouchy, but it has thrown off my routine. I like that she's getting a better afternoon nap, though.

Your testing experiences always amaze me, Prof, sine here in the public education desert (with a few exceptions), there is still not a sttate-wide science test that counts for anything, much less subject specific tests.

  • Oh, teething babies...poor Biblio! Good luck with that!!

Prof, will you be returning to teaching next year after the baby comes, or do you think you'll take a year off?

[QUOTE]Congrats to your hubby, Resa!!! I'm gonna cut off 9 inches of my hair in about an hour!! (well, I won't, but the stylist will). I'm giving it to Pantene Beautiul Lengths so they can make a wig for a woman fighting cancer. My aunt just shaved her head after her chemo left her with very little left (she's in the midst of her breast cancer ... had her double mastectomy the week of our wedding).

*hugs* and *prayers* for your aunt, Kristan.

  • Nothing much new here, just planning ahead for summer :) We've got some fun things planned, and will hopefully be able to do a little more in terms of visiting family/taking mini-trips since we aren't saving for a wedding this summer.

First on the agenda is a trip to the Twin Cities in mid-May with H and two of his brothers for a Twins/Red Sox game (one of H's brothers is a HUGE red sox fan). I don't really follow baseball much except for the Braves somewhat (H's team) but it should be fun regardless, just hoping the weather is nice! It'll be fun to spend a weekend down there and visit with my sister too.
  • Oh, Biblio, I WISH we had no state tests. I feel like Texas at least took them more seriously than Oklahoma does. At my current school I've had to deal with kids being told that their Biology test "doesn't matter," because it's not TECHNICALLY required to graduate. And then we get told each year to step it up when our passing rate goes down. Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh.

Resa, I'm at least taking SOME time off after Baby arrives, and not going back to teaching. I might go back after a year, but I've also considered finding a job with a little more flexibility (as in, I could take time off if I needed to without being afraid of the chaos that will ensue in my absence). Ideally I'd find something where I can work from home, even part time, so that I'm still contributing to our family financially, but also, you know, staying with our baby. =)

This is exactly the situation with the science test here. The kids take it, but don't need to pass it to graduate, so they blow it off. Then the poor science teachers get in trouble for not having high pass rates. And the state is too scared to actually require it to pass because it will be "hard" and kids will fail and not graduate and then their graduation rates are low and then NCLB money goes bye-bye and....ugly cycle. At least reading and writing are required for graduation, even if the tests are ridiculously easy and emphasizing all the wrong things. Ug!

  • Prayers from me for your aunt as well Kristan! My sister's boyfriend just found out that his mom has breast cancer, but it sounds like they will be able to do less serious forms of treatment at this point, i.e. less invasive surgery and radiation only, no chemo.
  • That is so exciting Ressa!

I go to my second doctor's appointment today. I just pray all is well with the baby. Can't wait for this week to be over. H is working late tomorrow night and maybe Friday, but it is crunch time for me since it is the end of the semester. I have so much to start/finish yet.
