Mr. and Ms.?

Okay here's one. One of my guests whom I'm close to mentioned that she preferrs to be referred to (as a couple) as Mr. John Smith and Ms. Jane Smith. Their children are also invited to the wedding. So the outside envelope would say Mr. John Smith and Ms. Jane Smith, but then how would I word the inner envelope? Like this?

Mr. and Ms. Smith
Bobby and Sally

Is that right? 'Mr. and Ms. Smith' looks odd to me, but 'Mr. Smith and Ms. Smith' looks odder.

Re: Mr. and Ms.?

  • I think this is fine.  The point of the inner envelope is to indicate which people in the household/social unit are invited, and while "Mr. and Ms. Smith" may look odd, if it tells John and Jane Smith that they are invited with Bobby and Sally, it's doing its job.
  • I've normally seen first names rather than titles on inner envelopes.  Is that an option?
  • I thought it was always Mr. and Mrs. Smith on inner envelopes. First names are for informal use, right?
