Timing

Hello! We're working on the details of our reception timeline. As of now, we're serving dinner at 7:00 pm, having our first dance (and father-daughter, mother-son dances) at 8:00 pm, and doing the cake cutting at 8:45 pm.

Now, in addition to the cake, we're having a ice cream cookie sandwich station, where we'll have four types of ice cream and five types of cookies, and somebody there to custom-make sandwiches for guests. We've hired this company to serve guests for 2.5 hours. When should they open up this service? Towards the end of dinner (7:45ish), right after the first dance (8:30ish), or when the cake is served (8:45ish)?

If it needs to be at the same time as the cake, should we move the cake cutting up to earlier in the night?

Thank you!

Re: Timing

  • I would do it as the same time as the cake being served.  I wouldn't want to fill up on cake and then miss the ice cream sandwich, or vice versa. I'd rather make a decision once I know all my options.  ;)

I think the cake cutting timing is only something your venue/caterer can answer. How long will it take them to slice, plate, and serve the cake?

Then, time the cookies to start around the time the cake service will start.

2.5 hours is a long time. How many guests do you have?
  • Okay, I had a feeling I should have them served at the same time.

We're having about 100 guests, but as I said, the cookies are put together for each individual... like, I could walk up and say, "I want white macadamia nut cookies with black raspberry ice cream", or "I want one chocolate chip cookie and one almond butter cookie with double chocolate ice cream on the inside". So it takes a little bit longer, rather than somebody walking up a just grabbing a piece of cake or a slice of pie. I'm wanting it to be open throughout the reception so that guests can go up whenever they want.

I'm thinking that means I'll probably need to move the cake cutting up to earlier in the night. It seems like the cake is usually served later. Have you guys ever heard of it being right after dinner?
  • I would probably move your cake cutting to about 7:45. (It's not going to take you an hour to eat).  Then immediately go into the first dances at 8pm.  The venue will need cut and plate the cake. So, you can serve the cake about 8:15, and open the ice cream buffet at 8:30
