Living Social or Groupon Getaways

My fiancee and I already have our honeymoon planned but we wanted to treat my parents to a weekend getaway as a thank you for all their help with the wedding. We have been looking at the getaways on livingsocial or groupon. They seem to be great deals, but possibly too good to be true. Have any of you purchased and used one of these or maybe know someone who has? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

That is a very thoughtful gift! They are all legit, but definitely be aware of the terms and conditions. They often have blackout dates, limited capacity available, and may have minimum stays. If you can work within their terms, which means that you have to be flexible about when you go, then should work out!

  • Another great option is Travelzoo.

I've used travelzoo before and found really good deals.  They were legit, but like PP said, read all the fine print.

The benefit of using things like this is that often you can just buy the voucher, and the gift recipient can book whatever dates they want (that aren't blacked out).  You can't usually do that if you're trying to book a trip for someone else otherwise.

  • Also check around to see if there are better deals. The CheapCarribean price for my honeymoon location was cheaper than the Groupon deal.
  • I've used Groupon Getaways twice and had wonderful trips both times.  Ditto PP on reading all the fine print and use the 'discussion' section if you have any questions or need to clarify anything.

Also, check other travel sites to make sure it's really a good price.  Both of the times I've used it, the Groupon deal was significantly cheaper than booking through other sources, however, I saw a deal recently for a trip to Italy which has a similar itenerary to the trip my H and I booked a few weeks ago and we got a better price through Costco than the Groupon deal, so it's definitely something to look into.

  • My friend used a Groupon Getaway for her HM in Hawaii last year.  They were flexible with when they could go, so they got a great deal.  She said it was a much nicer resort than they would've booked on their own too.
  • Thanks guys! I will definitely look into all the other options too, glad to hear they are legit though. I had this horrible vision of sending my parents to some roach infested motel on accident!
  • We used a groupon for our honeymoon. But before buying it we went online to check the hotel's availability for the dates we wanted & reviews on local travel sites. Once all looked good, we bought & booked immediately to avoid possibly losing the dates we wanted.
  • We've used travelzoo to book hotels and entire trip packages.  Just be sure to read the terms and also to check out accommodations/reviews on Trip Advisor before purchasing!
