Wedding Invitations & Paper

Wedding Newb

So I am very confused because I keep hearing soooo many different things regarding invites and save the dates. Our wedding will be March 21, 2014 and lots of out of town guests will hopefully come.
1. So when do we send out STD's and then what about invites?
2. Do they have to match...meaning each other or the wedding colors?
3. We might design our own...whatever.... with cute graphics and possibly a photo...are the more detailed ones typically for invites or save the dates?

STDs (if you choose to send them, as they are not required) go out around 9-12 months in advance. You can do them a little closer to the date, but anything under 6 months is pretty pointless. They do not have to match your wedding colors or your wedding invitations. Our STDs were stick figures and our invitations were floral branches. Our invitations didn't match our wedding colors, either. The flowers on them were a raspberry color and our wedding colors were champagne and coral. You can do whatever design you want on them.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • 1. STDS are sent out 8-12 months in advance usually, sometimes as little as 6 months. But it is COMPLETELY OK not to send STDs. I think it saves a lot of problems in the long run to not send them personally, in case your budget changes and you no longer can afford to invite everyone you sent an STD. Also, it's COMPLETELY OK to not send EVERYONE on your list an STD. I would only send them to people you are 100% certain will be invited, no matter what budget/life changes happen.

Invitations are sent 6-8 weeks before the wedding.

    2. Nothing has to match. The STDs don't have to be in the same style as the invites, and neither have to be in your wedding colors. The design is completely up to you.

    3. Usually a STD just has the date & city-no times, addresses, etc. The invites need to have the date, time, address of the ceremony location.

  • I agree with PPs. One thing I will add based on my own experience is that while you do not have to send STDs to everyone, it might be easier to. We only sent them to OOT guests at first (which was basically my whole half of the guest list and a few of his cousins). Then an aunt of his wrote on his Facebook wall "where's my save the date???" And I guess other people were asking about them so I ended up reordering and sending them to everyone. If you foresee people getting upset over it, maybe just send them to everybody if you decide to send them at all. Just my two cents.

  • Ok good to know! My fiancee and I are proabbly taking engagement photos and I want to incorporate that into a cute infographic type of design depicting our relationship timeline and segwaying into the wedding info. So would that more suitable for a STD or actual invite?

Most of our guests will be out of town and I already have people asking for info because the wedding is in March(a popular month here in AZ). we will prob end up with about 120ish on our guest list but, vast majority are large families so we won't have to spend hopefully too much on postage.

I think you need to research sample STDs and invites. A picture would be fine to use on an STD but not an invite. And your relationship timeline can go on your wedding website not the STD or invite. Wedding info such as directions, bridal party, hotel blocks, etc also go on yoru wedding website.

  • Side note: I would cancel your knot account and recreate one without your name in it.

  • Yeah goingt to delete this account and maybe not even making a new one. A few too many brides who think they know everything and don't embrace anything different. Offbeat bride is way more helpful and less stuck up princesses there.
