Please help with Rusic Wedding Cake/Desert....

Our June wedding is very informal rustic black, white and crimson celebration. Our meal is buffet style broaster chicken, fresh green beans with mushrooms, onion and bacon, buttered corn, potato salad, pasta salad, and homemade potato rolls. The problem is cake/desert. Neither of us eat or even like cake. And we will not be having a cake cutting ceremony. We thought having a desert buffet/table would be nice and fitting. My question is... would it be better to have multiple random deserts OR narrow it down to a select few deserts we enjoy.  My sister does not want it to look/feel like a pot luck, and we don't either. What are your suggestions for skipping the "traditional stacked wedding cake" and doing something different for deserts? Are there any rules I need to follow?? this is all new to me so I appreciate your suggestionsSmile

  • If you want to do a dessert table and not a traditional wedding cake that is perfectly fine.

You could have things like, mini tarts/pies, brownies, cookies, mini cakes, candy, ice cream, cupcakes, etc.

Just make sure that you have a good selection, meaning not having everything be chocolate...mix it up with flavors a bit.

Just make sure that you have enough of each item for each person.  With dessert bars people generally will try a bit of each one rather then just pick one dessert and not try the rest.

I have a super cute "Love is Sweet" burlap banner I think would like very nice hanging on the front of the table. Tables will be covered in white linen tablecloth and a burlap table runner. What can I add to the the top of the table for decoration to make it come alive??
  • A lot of people have said how much they love love wedding cake, and I promise you whatever we do have will be very nice. Our guests are our top priority. I amjust reaching out for some help/suggestions...

Um, just put the desserts nicely on the table and that will make it come alive...no decorations really needed.

  • Pie is my first thought.

We had a dessert buffet with chocolate cake w/raspberrry, lemon cake w/almonds, blueberry cobbler w/ice cream, sorbet, fresh fruit with chocolate for dipping (in a chafing dish, though, we didn't mess with a fountain), and milk shooters with chocolate chip cookies.  It was all arranged on a round table and looked pretty.  I bought two "cake topper" banners from the Etsy shop ReadyGo, one said our names and the other said "Love is sweet."  They went in the two cakes on the table, although they were just regular cakes, not tiered or fancy.

ETA: Also, I don't eat meat and would have nothing to have at your wedding.  Do you have any vegetarians coming?  Please add something for them if you do, and be sure to label the green beans as not vegetarian.
  • Your desert bar sounds lovely, I am hoping we can pull it off. We do not have any vegetarians attending our party but thank you for pointing that out.
