Good software for menus, addressing, programs, etc??

I'm looking to create and print our menus, envelopes, ceremony programs (and more!) on my own.  Has anyone used a software program to do this on your own?  I'm looking for something a little more advanced than Microsoft Word.  One thought I had was Adobe Illustrator.  Any advice here would be really helpful!!

Thanks!

  • H designed all our stuff in Illustrator. You can also use Photoshop. He said Illustrator is a bit friendlier to print-based design.

  • Do you have experience using the more advanced programs? I designed my invites using Microsoft Word and I think they turned out pretty good! You can see them here:

  • I am using Adobe InDesign for mine. It's a bit more user friendly than Illustrator or Photoshop. But then again, I'm just finishing up a graphic design class for grad school.

  • If you have access to it or are willing to shell out the money, Abdobe InDesign is probably your best option for layouts (in all honestly though, whatever you're most familiar will still be a good option with because you'll be able to work more efficiently).  It it a pretty pricey program however, so another option would be Gimp/GimpShop which is an open source program very similar to photoshop.  Since I learned Photoshop first it's different enough to drive me absolutely crazy, but it would be a way more advanced option than MS Word.

Also, if you're doing the design work but taking it to be printed, make sure you convert the text to outline (if using Adobe, and in theory Gimp should have a similar option).  Even if you save it as a PDF some fonts will not carry over and suddenly the trip to the printer becomes downright traumatic (been there).
  • Thank you so much ladies, super helpful!!
  • I am using paint.net, its free. similar to older versions of photoshop.  you can also search and download some beautiful fonts for free from several wesbites (dafont.com)
And I found some great texture backgrounds through digital scrapbooking websites.
