XP Seating chart - why is this so hard?

I have been making decisions for my wedding like it's my job, but there are a few things emerging that I just can't seem to make up my mind on.  How to let people know where they are sitting at the reception is one of them.  A big board at the entrance listing the people at each table; a card on each table listing the people; escort cards at the front; or seating cards at each place.  I know it's a small detail but it's like I have too many ideas and can't decide which I like best.

What are you doing/have you done?  Pictures??

  • We had wooden numbers that I painted and rhinestoned on each table and then river rocks on a front table with each guest's name on the front and their table number on the back.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • we had name cards attached to starfish.    I've seen big boards also.   I do not have a preference either way.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • the only problem w/big boards is that you can't make last minute changes if someone cancels, etc.  Once it's printed, there's no going back

  • We had escort cards at the front.  We had 8-12 people per table (we had a mix of round table sizes), and we let people pick where to sit at their assigned table.

If you are having round tables, I think it is unnecessary to assign individual seats.  You also cannot just have cards at the individual tables; if you do assign seats, you need to have escort cards and place cards so people know what table to go to and aren't wandering around looking at each table to find their card.
  • Escort cards seems to be the most common so if you go with that it will be easy for people to understand.
  • We made table numbers using IKEA photo frames and then we had a seating chart written up on the restaurant's menu board.

  • We're having pumpkin shaped escort cards. The tables will have a small chalk board wth the table number written on it.
