My Holy Thursday dilemma. Sigh.

;-)
So, I have a super-crazy afternoon and evening (well, basically the rest of Holy Week!) and I was going to take myself out to dinner tonight before Mass since H and I won't be able to eat together, Plus, it's Holy Thursday! It's like sort of a feast day! We sing the Gloria at Mass!

Now, I gave up alcohol for Lent. First of all, the Triduum techincally isn't "Lent," and like I mentioned, isn't Holy Thursday a bit more celebratory? (I tend to err on the side of "let's celebrate everything!" H is a bit stricter...) I'm planning on going to a nice restaurant that's near my church and I've never gotten to go to before, and I'm debating whether I should allow myself a glass of wine with which to better enjoy my meal! What do you think? Am I just making excuses? :-P

eta: dang it. i forgot to make a poll. sorry...

  • I probably wouldn't bc I know I'd feel bad about it later. Easter will be here real soon and you can really enjoy your wine then! Can you treat yourself with something else to "celebrate"? Extra special dessert or something?
  • I can't remember, but I think I've heard that Lent ends like right before mass tonight or right after?

I feel like a lot of the things I hear about when you can go ahead and indulge in whatever you gave up for Lent are usually made up by people who want to go back to whatever they gave up.

  • I didn't know you gave up alcohol, too!  It's been HARD for me!  I agree with Riss, though...you'll feel better about your lenten penance later if you stick it out the next few days.  And then you'll be able to enjoy your wine all the more on Easter!

  • Also, insert obligatory, "Oh, you gave up alcohol?  That must be SO HARD..." from the pregnant lady.  :p

  • Lent ends with Holy Thursday mass. After Mass, it becomes a time of more intense fasting.

    Holy Thursday isn't a solemnity.
  • I know this sound silly... but I'm right there with you with soda!  I rarely drink alcohol, but I LOVE soda, especially Dr. Pepper, and it's killing me right now.  (It's also like my coffee too, I don't drink coffee and get my little bit of caffeine from soda).

I would just stick it out.  It sucks, but I always feel bad if I FEEL like I'm cheating, even if it's technically not, you know?

  • ok, so contrary to all of your wise advice, I did, haha! And the funny thing is, when I talked to H later, it turned out *he* had also gone out to dinner and had some beer! I was like, "I totally thought you'd be annoyed!" He was like, "Nope! Any day that has the Gloria is a solemnity, and you can break your fast in my book!" -- totally agreed!

  • H had a drink last night , and I gave him a hard time about it. He was like "it's the last supper! They had booze there!"
