Hotel or not a hotel?

I am looking at reception venues and am considering a few different hotels. However, I am also looking at places that aren't hotels. I thought a hotel would be better so that guests have a place to stay without worrying about traveling after the party. However, it is slightly cheaper to have the reception be at a non-hotel place. What are your thoughts? Thanks for the advice!! :)

Re: Hotel or not a hotel?

  • How many people do you think will stay over? If it's a lot, I'd lean toward a hotel. However, I don't think you necessarily have to make this decision before looking at venues. Check out a few of each and choose the venue you love. The hotel situation will work out either way as most non-hotel venues can recommend hotels that will allow you to reserve blocks. You can then set up a shuttle between the two.
  • we did a non-hotel but the venue provided a shuttle to a nearby hotel.  I agree that hotel-venues are nice for people with small kids, or other special conditions where they might need to run up to their room throughout the event -- or yes, for an easy end-of-the-night solution.

Non-hotel is fine as long as you DO provide a nearby solution.  We had many people that were in their hometown, but chose to stay down the street at the hotel instaed of driving home.
  • Have you tried the food at these places?  Are you restricted in what vendors you can use at any of the venues?  You may have to use the hotel's restaurant to cater, so you should make sure they're good before you commit.
  • We are not using a hotel, per se.  It's an inn/conference center, so a little unique.  There's on site lodging (both an inn, which is more hotel like, and luxury cabins, for a large group of friends).  It was a nice middle ground!

  • One of the venues we looked at had a list of local hotels that would provide free shuttle service to and from the venu.We won't be having many out of town guests, so it wasn't important for us, but that's something you can always ask about.

  • Keep in mind that even if you have the reception at a hotel, you may end up with 2/3 of your guests staying at a different hotel, anyway.  At least in my circle, most people prefer to find their own hotel rooms (one family will seek out the cheapest option in town, one will want the most luxurious, one will want the one closest to the reception, etc.).  As long as there is a hotel nearby and/or a hotel that provides a shuttle service, you should be fine!
