Cake stand: yes or no?

Hey everyone,

Trying to decide whether or not to spend money on a cake stand or just set the cake on the table. We will just have a standard three tier cake. What are you all doing?

Re: Cake stand: yes or no?

  • I'm doing cupcakes, we're renting the cupcake stand from our bakery.
  • I'm cheap.  I'd put the thing on the table and be done with it.  Unless you have a specific vision in mind and it includes an elevated cake, then let it shine by itself.

When I first read the post "subject" I thought it said "can you stand cake" and I was going to rip someone a new one if they didn't like cake!  Glad I chose to re-read it before posting.
    S'mores. Just S'mores please.

I too am cheap (evidenced by the fact that I am ordering our cake from walmart); so thanks for the validation that it is okay to not have a stand.

And TK totally needs a "like" button.

I was thinking a "cake stand" like a "keg stand".

I had this mental image of a bride being upended over her cake...and...well...you get my drift.

I was rather appalled for a moment until I realized what this thread was about.

    I need help.

Or to hang out with fewer rednecks.  :)
  • Stevelovesmelissa - you are fine to do whatever you want. I always think this during my deliberations :
Will I or a guest ever notice?

Point - will a guest ever look at your cake and say "a stand would have classed this up"?  NOPE.  No one will say a word, and you will love the way it looks on any table because it will be a beautiful cake and needs to introduction.  Spend the money if you want, save it if you dont.

Shayla -  I MUST read things several times before responding because no doubt, I am in a hurry and got it all wrong the first time.  The mental image of a bride over a cake as if it were a keg is hilarious - so thank you for that!

  • You can rent cake stands for like 40 dollars if you like the look of it. I love the look and think they make the cake stand out especially for pictures. But if you don't care either way and want to save the money, go with what you think would best fit you and your wedding.
  • My baker hasn't said anything about a stand, so I doubt we'll have one.  Might just have the cake set on a big mirror or something like that, who knows.

Shayla I totally pictured a bride during a keg stand after reading your thing, total riot.  Just picturing a semi big dress similar to mine falling down around the bride ha ha.

I need help, I know.  Embarassed

I honestly hadn't even considered a CAKE* stand for our wedding.  But then, I won't lie, I'm kind of flying by the seat of my pants for most of this with a "small" budget (still seems big to me at about $5k), so we're doing without a LOT of things.

That said, if a CAKE* stand really is only about $40 as a PP said, and it's something you REALLY want...that's not a HUGE amount to make you happy!

(*-Emphasis added for people like myself who fail at reading.)
  • I've never even thought about this. I guess I'll ask my baker and see what she suggests?

My first thought is "no stand" but it also might depend on the size of your cake. Three tiers might be pretty heavy?
