Sand Ceremony

We are planning on doing the sand ceremony during our wedding, but I'm having trouble finding a kit or a vase that I like.  I would prefer a vase that has a lid on it, but all the one's that I find with lids have very narrow openings at the top and I'm not sure how talented we'd be at not getting sand everywhere.

Has anyone either used a kit like this?  Or anyone found a vase (that isn't too fancy, we're the less is more type) that has a cover to it?

Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!

Re: Sand Ceremony

  • I posted this in a few threads down, but we got ours from Michael's (the heart shaped vase with the glass stopper).  We then went to Bed Bath and Beyond and got some very small funnels.  We found it real easy to use with the funnels and that way we could direct the sand so we could get the fun layered lines.  The funnels were like $3 and you really can't see them from a distance.  I can't find a link for the funnels from BBB but I'm sure you can get them at Michaels too in their sand craft section too.  :)

  • Is the reason you want a lid for the vase because you don't want it to spill? Because I've heard of people pouring a layer of melted wax on top of the sand. That way you could use any vase you want. Just a thought...  :)

Related question, if anyone sees it....

If you put the layer of melted wax on top, will it keep the sand from shifting too much?  Our sand is going to have to travel home with us from Las Vegas and I've been trying to figure this out.
  • Yes, the melted wax is supposed to stop the sand from moving at all. You need to leave enough room (about a 1/2 inch) between the top of the sand and the top of the vase so the wax is thick enough to hold it in place.  Here's an idea to cover the wax if you don't like how it looks....

If you wish to hide the wax, place a circle of coordinating cloth around the top of the vase and secure it with a rubber band. Then place a ribbon over the rubber band. Use a scrap of netting from the wedding veil, cloth from the bridesmaid dresses or groomsmen handkerchiefs, or ribbons from the bridal bouquet for an extra special touch.

Thanks for the melted wax idea!  That was exactly my concern!
