You just won the lottery....

Since we're having a slow Wednesday, random question that I always love to see people's answers for:

You just won the megamillions lottery (lets say 50 million). What do you do?

My answer would be the following:

1.) pass the eff out
2.) recover and scream until I pass out again
3.) recover again and immediately contact an investements officer
4.) peace out, 'Merica. Imma see the world!
5.) come back and set up something wacky. Like an emu farm.
6.) set up my parents in style for life.
7.) Occassionally 'peace out 'Merica" every year or so for the rest of my life.

1. Open a pitbull rescue
2. Pay off my parents house
3. Buy ourselves a house
4. Buy us both new cars
5. Pay off any debt
6. Put money aside to pay for my future children's college education
7. Buy FMIL a handicap accesible home (its only a matter of time before she loses all feeling in her legs and wont be able to walk)
8. Invest, with the help of a financial advisor

After recovering from shock:

1) Contact a financial planner

2) Pay off house and all existing debt

3) Give my notice at work (#2 and #3 would probably happen at the same time)

4) Invest a large chunk of the money into some sort of savings that yields the best return

5) Give a substantial gift to both sets of parents

6) Travel

7) Make home improvements

2. probably die of a massive MI, however if that didn't happen I would:
3. see a $$$$ pro
4. either donate mega bucks to The Gentle Barn and area shelters or start something of the like on my own.
5. Make sure loved ones are provided for
6. travel, travel, travel

That's interesting, we're all pretty much the same, except on the homes. B, are you currently living in your Forever Home then? I'm intrigued!

<div>No we aren't in our Forever Home just yet, but we could live there for a long time happily. H and I actually have had the lottery discussion often when we decide to play when Powerball gets up really high. We decided that since we recently only moved into our house last year, we'd still like to enjoy our first home together for awhile because honestly, right now we don't need anymore space. So we'd improve some of the cosmetics, add an addition, add a fence, get a new deck/patio area, do landscaping in the front and backyards - things that would add value to the house and also improve how we enjoy the house. Putting up the fence would also allow us to finally get the great dane my H dreams about owning.</div>

If I didn't die right on the spot...
1.) Contact financial people
2.) Pay off outstanding student loans
3.) Set more money aside for future graduate/doctoral work
4.) Get FI a car, then upgrade mine
5.) Depending on when this happens, either buy a house or put $ aside for a house
6.) Savings for future children's education, retirement, emergency fund, yada yada yada
7.) Some unncessary splurge, like a vacation or something. Our vacation to Vietnam, perhaps
8.) Get my gorgeous 100+ year old piano refurbished so that it's truly playable again
9.) Somewhere along the line I'd probably pay off my mom's house for her
10.) Give some to a few of our favorite charities

I'd probably throw away the ticket since nothing good ever happens. My family is cursed.
In the case that I realized it wasn't a joke:

Pay off my debt & FI debt
Pay off my mom's house
Pay off my Dad's debt
Buy working vehicles for both FI and I
Buy a house
Contact financial advisor
Set money aside for any future child(ren)'s education
Take a vacation

1. Cry like Kristen Bell meeting a sloth
2. Build our dream house.
3. (oddly specifc) Build mom and dad a tiny house with an outlet in the middle, so that nothing in the house is more than 25 feet from said outlet. I'd put it on the land we bought to build our house on.
4. Adopt some critters.
5. try to have babies.
6. Pay off loans.
7. travel.

After I wake up from a coma... 1) hire a private investigator to make sure it wAsnt one of FIs pranks 2) quit my job 3) financial planning 4) full college funds for all 3 of our kids 5) tell FI to quit his job 6) pay off all debts and student loans 6) move to our forever home NOT in California (I'm sick of ca and he's been ready to leave ca since he got here). ... And my brain won't go past there

I would call a lawyer and set up various documents, i.e. living will

I would then call a financial advisor, set-up payments, investments, etc.
I would then pay off my student loan, a few other bills

I would then pay off my mom's house payments and arrange for huge amounts of rennovations, improvements on her home (better driveway, better parking, whole new kitchen, whole new bathroom - the works - furnishings, appliances etc.

I would then pay off my sister and BIL's house and all of the same mentioned above

I would then call a realtor so my Fiance and I could find our own place (we currently rent)

I would then do as Pele said and go on a MAJOR world tour with my FI (who could say 'bye-bye' to hisi job, or take a long-term absence, his call)

I would then...call this awesome French restaurant in Georgetown, Washington, D.C., and reserve the whole place for a celebration party/feast, to which I would invite my fiance and our family and friends.

And I guess I would do something similar to the house thing I mention up there for my Dad and Stepmom. Maybe treat them to a round the world cruise with the best room on the ship.

Pele-My family has a beautiful upright Mendelssohn that's over 100 years old. We're pretty sure it's from the 1890s. My mom still has it, and hasn't gotten it tuned regularly, so nobody plays it. It doesn't hold a tune very long though because it's in rough shape. It needs 2/3 new strings, new hammers, the works. My mom doesn't really play anymore, and she says that once I have a place of my own, she'll let me have it if I pay to get it refurbished. I'll be saving up for that, because it's definitely worth it! I play, and I really miss having an actual piano to practice on! Thanks for asking!

I'm older than most of you, I can tell. Here's mine

I would buy property and set it up in a trust, allowing my girls who are adults to live in the homes and allowing them to inherit homes upon my death.

Put money aside for 10 year old to go to college

Set up trust for grand daughter and future grandchildren

Provide for future MIL as she is poor as a church mouse

Arrange a plan to pay off the house, keeping in mind we still might need the tax break

If we don't buy another house, re-do our garage for FI, who likes to putter

Invest money in a retirement plan and in retirement annuities

Negotiate my employer and work just enough to get medical insurance

Go back to school

Buy a really nice road bike

Every year do a traveling road bike trip and s few other trips

Donate to some local charities I really like

Sierra524 I love your pitbull rescue idea! I would do the exact same if pitties weren't banned where I live... so I guess I would just make big donations to several worthy animal rescues across the country as well as the lawyer in my province who is fighting to lift the pitbull ban.

The rest of my list is:

1) Pay off all my student loans
2) Buy brand new cars for my fiance, both of my parents, and my sister
3) Send all my future in-laws on a first-class vacation to a destination of their choice
4) Upgrade all of our wedding! Go with the ceremony location we can't afford now, pay our photographer for 10 hours instead of 6, get an 8-tier take covered in fancy decorations, plan a two-month honeymoon with first-class plane tickets and five star hotels etc.
5) Buy a house for my fiance and I, a new home but nothing overly big since more space = more cleaning and we both don't want to be doing that!
6) Invest the rest so we can live comfortably for the rest of our lives
7) Find jobs that we will love to do, where we would be able to work part-time (25 - 30 hours per week maybe) where we can go to work because we find the work rewarding and enjoyable not because we need the paycheque.
8) Write separate letters to all three of my current bosses telling each of them exactly what I think of them and the company (positive and negative but probably 90% negative)
9) Probably buy some really great bottles of wine, my fiance is a big wine lover so I'm sure he could easily drop 50k on a few really rare and expensive bottles.
