help with BM attire

I'll try to keep this short :)

I'm a November bride, but I really like shorter BM dresses (knee length) so I checked with my girls to make sure they were cool with that and they were. So we went and bought the dresses, the 2 BM's have small spaghetti straps/knee lenght and my MOH is strapless/knee length.

We are having a church wedding, I did check and strapless dresses are acceptable. However, my mother and grandmother are having a fit about the BMs being in strapless in the church, being cold in November for outside pictures. I did ask the girls their opinions and everyone agreed that they can suck it up for a few outdoor pictures.

But I was thinking of just seeing if I could find some cute shawls or wraps for them to wear if they choose to (I will obviously buy them since it's just an accessory) I've done some looking online and I can't find anything that matches the look I'm going for. Does anyone have any ideas on where I can find something like this?

Thanks in advance!

Re: help with BM attire

  • What color are the dresses?
  • Can you just get "neutral" wraps? They don't have to match, but they should coordinate - try: gold, silver, bronze, white, black, cream, ivory, grey, brown, or tan. Do any of those coordinate?

Maybe the Pashmina would work best?
If you look around on Etsy they seem to have some cute wraps on other shop pages as well! Best of luck!
  • I did my pashminas for my girls to wear in case it was chilly the morning of the wedding. I got them at Dillards. You can see them in my sig pic; is that what you're looking for?
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Retread, I will not change the dresses, and it was not a discourtesy. I asked the girls over and over if they were sure it would be ok. I am also very well aware of the weather in PA at that time,I have lived here for a good long time as have all of my BMs. So it's not as if I'm going into this blind. So for one or two outdoor photos, I think we will manage just fine. I am not trying to be rude, but I have thought about this and I was not looking for opinions on my "bad decision" of dresses.

Thank you to the PPs who have given me other helpful advice. Feeling stupid for not mentioning the dress colors- they are hunter green. So I was thinking about ivory or charcoal gray accesories. KJiras - I really liked some of the pashminas on the link, thank you! Addie, I will look into Dillards as well - that is kind of what I was going for.
  • I got pashminas for all my girls from an ebay store.  They had 20+ colors available.  They were soft and very nice.  I made sure the store I bought them from was in the US and took returns, in case there were any issues, I could return them easy.
  • I would skip the outdoor pictures, seriously. And encourage them to wear tights if they want to or purchase matching tights for them.

  • Here's a cute picture with shawls and gloves.  But it might be a good idea to have a back-up plan for the outdoor pics if the weather isn't cooperating being particularly cold or snowy (especially depending on their shoes!)

  • I purchased my pashmina at an amazon store :

It's a pashmina and silk mix, which is warmer than a synthetic. The prices are reasonable because they are seconds. I couldn't find the defect with mine.

I'll assume you have the same back up plan that I had: if the weather's bad, 'forgetaboutit.' The pictures can always be taken inside, if that's the case.

  • FWIW: I had a December wedding in Alaska and we had a couple feet of snow outside and it was below freezing the day of the wedding.  My BMs were all in just below knee length dresses with tiny cap sleeves except the MOH who had a sleeveless dress with a short-sleeved lace bolero.  I had a sleeve-less dress.  I was determined it was not going to be a "Christmas wedding" and I was not going to wear long sleeves!

Anyway, so yes, your BMs can wear whatever you want them to.  That being said, it would not be very nice to make them stand out in the cold for very long at all.  H and I wanted outdoor shots so the only shots we did outdoors were just of the two of us.  Maybe that would be a good way to go?  Otherwise, yea, you need to make sure there is some way for everyone to stay warm during shots.  I think the pashminas are cute but that may or may not be enough for your area.
