Reception Dress...or not?

I am having a different wedding, in that the ceremony and reception will be combined into one. The guests will already be seated at their tables.

My dress is fit and flare, so definitely movable. However, I plan to have F-U-N at our reception and was thinking about changing into a second dress at some point during the evening, I'm on a budget, so this dress will in no means break the bank.

Is anyone planning on changing dresses?

Re: Reception Dress...or not?

  • I loved my dress too much to want to change into something else.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

This really isn't that different, FYI.

If you want two dresses, go for it. I would suggest saving your money. Why would you want to miss part of your F-U-N to change clothes?!
  • Nope. I honestly don't understand changing dresses. If you want to, then go for it, but I find it a little strange when the bride changes dresses.....that's just me though.

Yup.  I wore that sucker as long as I possibly could.  If it hadn't looked crazy I would have even worn that sucker on the plane to our HM...but that is crazy to do so don't do that :)

I love my dress, but have been thinking about a second. We are going to be partying into the late night and I also don't want to be too hot since we are Sept 14 outside in NJ... I might just have a back up incase

  • I don't get why brides change into reception dresses (or even other wedding dresses!) You pay an arm and a leg for a wedding dress and everything that goes with it, and you only get to wear it a few short hours. Then it's over and done with and you never get to wear it again. I'm milking mine for all it's worth!

    This.

I'm getting married somewhat early in the day, but I'm planning on wearing it ALL dang day!  I have no idea how I'll accomplish this.  I'm thinking of seeing if we can go out to eat for "dinner" that night some place nice too.  You know, like McDonald's, since that's about all we'll have money for!
    (That's a joke!)

But, if you want to change dresses, do it.  But, like others, I don't understand why you'd want to buy this beautiful wedding dress and then change out of it.

But, it's your day!  Do it how YOU want!  :)
  • I hate dress changes, but just my opinion.

I would have so rocked my dress in a McD's if it meant I could have worn it for longer.

  • I loved my dress, but I changed into a sari for part of our reception as a nod to H's Nepali heritage. Towards the end of the night, I changed again into a short dress for some Latin dancing.
  • I asbolutely detest dress changes. You only have ONE wedding dress. I find brides who do that snobby personally.
  • I don't like dress changes, but that is just my opinion. If that's what you like/want to do I say go for it. :)
  • I changed didn't feel like wearing the dress anymore.

I agree. Dress switches due to cultural reasons make TOTAL sense..Brides who just want to dresses for no reason  seems like a big fast waste of money

I'm pretty serious about going SOMEWHERE in it.  I can sell McDonald's to him.  We can eat off the dollar menu!!

That said, I think saris are so pretty!  And I'm with PPs that cultural changes make perfect sense.  :)  But...I'm not a fan of "changing just to change".

    But that's just me!!
  • Ha! I posted this question and realized I never went back to check for answers! Thank goodness I'm the type that don't really need others opinions, cause some of the folks on the the Knot forum are downright snarky! lol Firstly, I didn't pay and arm and a leg for my dress, I paid a whopping $300! My second dress would be less than $100. I've only seen one other wedding where the guests were seated at the reception dinner tables already, with no cocktail hour or change of chairs, etc...so to me that's different FYI. I think it'll be one of those things where I play it by ear, as a PP said. If I'm fine, not too hot and still comfy in my dress, then I'll leave it on. If I'm not, then I'll change....IF I even buy the other dress. Happy weddings and marriages to all!

I generally think reception dresses are silly.

There is an exception for me though...I've been to a few multi-cultural weddings where the bride wore an American traditional white gown for the ceremony, and a beautiful wedding ensemble from her culture (or her husband's culture, depending) for the reception. For example, one of my best friends is Taiwanese in heritage and married a non-ethnic American this past summer. For their ceremony she wore a gorgeous white gown, and for the reception she changed into this amazing red and gold Chinese cheongsam. Not only did she look stunning, but her family also appreciated the nod to their heritage.

So in those instances, I totally get it. But two white wedding dresses? Nope, don't get it.

In all honesty, I didn't detect a single "snarky" response in this thread. You asked for honest opinions and you got them. At the end of the day it's your wedding, so if you want a second dress, then go for it!
  • I don't really see any snarkiness in here.

I also would never wear a reception dress. I am in love with my dress and I won't be taking it off until the end of the day. If I could wear it for longer, I would.
  • Can you please provide examples of the snarkiness that you believe was given, because I see none.

  • Do what makes you happy! it is your one day to do what you like.
  • I couldn't imagine switching out of my wedding dress so I didn't but I do believe that it is a decision up to you.
  • I know it is not always the intents, but dress changes just make me think the bride is looking for even more, ohs and ahs, compliments, and attention.

I've only been to one wedding too where everyone was seated at their tables and it was horrible.  We couldn't see or hear a thing.  I hope yours is planned better!  Many people do have their ceremony and reception at one location, but in different rooms with a cocktail hour between the two.  That's what we did and it worked perfect.

That said, I'm not a fan of dress changes.  It looks AWish.

And finally, if you didn't need opinions, why did you bother to post in the first place?
  • I'm not changing but my cousin ddid at her wedding. The dress she got married in was huge and she wanted to really dance at her reception so she bought a $30 white sun dress for the reception.
