Groomsmen vs ushers

Hello all,

I am not sure if this question belongs here but it is a "ceremony" type quest. I feel like an idiot but can you please tell me if there is a difference between ushers and grooms men? I thought they were one in the same but since joing the knot, I see both titles and realized Im confused!

I thought the GM''s seat/usher the guests? yes? No? Whats typical?

Re: Groomsmen vs ushers

  • Groomsman are a part of the wedding party and stand up with the bride and groom.  Ushers usually just seat people and then take their seat for the ceremony.  Ushers can coordinate with the groomsman attire, but is not necessary.

Many places will have the groomsman act as ushers too so you do not necessarily need to have both titles.  Back in the day where it was common to have the same number bridesmaids as groomsman, an "usher" was another way to include people you wanted to have a role in the wedding.  Now of days it is more common just include those people as groomsman since even sides does not matter!

Our ceremony site is a smaller site so we will be using our groomsman as ushers before the ceremony-- however when we looked at a different venue, the walk from the entrance to the seaing area was quite long so they had suggested using separate ushers so the guys did not get hot having to walk back and forth so many times before the ceremony.   Can vary on many different levels.  End of the day, it is up to yoU!

I think ushers are a complete crap job.  Nobody uses ushers anymore.  We can manage to seat ourselves.  The parents/grandparents frequently get seated by a groomsmen, another family member, etc.  There's really no need for ushers any longer and if they're that important, make them a groomsman.
  • We just had our GMs act as ushers.
  • A lot of people have their groomsmen double as ushers if they need them, like Libby did.

  • LAM - This may be a regional thing. Around here, Groomsmen and Ushers are one in the same. The Groomsmen function as Ushers prior to the ceremony, walk the bms down the aisle and either sit in the front row or stand up front with the groom during the ceremony.

  • We had 2 ushers. In addition to seating the guests they escorted our moms down that aisle and walk out with them during their intro.  This only worked though because we both have single moms.

  • My FI is from england, and to me it seems like, for them, the term usher IS a GM. That made for some confusing conversations.
