Cohabitating with pets

So, as I mentioned in the Weekend Plans thread, I'm starting the moving-in process with BF this weekend. First things first, Brady is moving in for good tonight.

Has anyone moved in an older dog with an older cat? I think it's different than having a dog/cat and getting a puppy/kitten. Violet has been around cats, and she's fine, but I'm not sure about Brady & dogs. I think he'll eventually be fine, because he'll be getting plenty of attention (far more than he is now, actually, since I feel like a terrible mother because I'm never home anymore), but I'm interested to see how this initial time goes. I think I'm going to get some Soft Paws, just in case he thinks that beating up on Violet is the way to go, but any other advice would be welcome!

    Everything that Liv said, do it. 

    I got Quigley when he was a year old, he had never been around cats, only around other dogs.  Buddy's only experience with a dog since I've adopted him is with my parent's 13 year old golden retriever and he was scared of her.

    Since Buddy and Quigley are the same size, they seem to  get along alright.  They chase each other around the house, but I did what Liv suggested.  I got a baby gate to put up in our spare bedroom for Buddy's food, water and litter box.  So if he feels threatened by Quigley at all, he can escape up there.  He never does though except to eat and litter box time.

    Since we got Quigley, Buddy has been back to his normal routine about a month ago.  He was hiding and laying low for a while, which we expected.  Now they sleep on the bed together and tag-team beg my BF for food.

    Good luck, I'm sure everything will be fine!!!!

    Our Golden and Setter grew up with adult cats, and the cats did really well when we introduced them. Now, with our older dogs, my parents' younger adult cats are fine aside from initial skittishness. Kitten (my dad's one year old cat) swipes at the dogs from time to time, but other than that, they're all good.

    I just want to say good luck!

    We've introduced an adult dog to cats before (she was fine), but all the cats always had a dog in the house the day they came home. From watching a lot of "My Cat from Hell," Liv's suggestion of a gate sounds great. Give lots of positive reinforcement.
