How to describe the ring of my dreams!

Hello! My boyfriend and I have been ring shopping this weekend and looking at some amazing options. It was really educational (and so much fun) and now that we're getting ready for the purchasing step, I need help describing what I want him to zero in on. We've had a hard time finding a ring with all of the components I like, and are likely going to " back into it" by purchasing the diamond and band separately and having them combined.

I am interested in a round solitaire that is lowly set in a simple four-prong setting on a very thin platinum band. I'd love a band that is 1.5 mm in width and an even width all the way around -- no tapering, no knife edge, just a flat symmetrical width all around. Is there a name or term for this type of band? What about the setting, one that is simple and low, without a bridge or trellis?

Any advice appreciated!
Erin

  • Why not look into a local store where you can design your own?  I know down here, in DC, Dominion Jewelers is the big one on custom stuff.  I'm not sure what Boston has, but maybe your local board would have some recommendations.

    Good luck!

Ditto this. Doing a custom ring is a great option.

My other advice would be to find pictures of rings that have the various components you like and use those to describe what it is you would like.

  • Most men (not all certainly), are very visual.  Pictures, pictures, pictures.

There are even websites where you can use a fun program to create your own ring virtually.  Play, print, wave it in his face while giving a dreamy sigh.  Problem solved.

  • Thanks for your messages! I have tried out the design your own sites, which are great fun. I haven't been able to find the descriptor for the band I like though, that is even all the way around. Ay info on what that style may be called, and also what style a very low set setting is would be much appreciated!

Do you mean a bezel setting when you say "very low setting"?

ETA: Here are some pictures of rings with bezel settings

  • There are also low settings that look more like "conventional" solitaires. Maybe something like this?

Low Set Round Moissanite Solitaire Ring
  • I love bezel, but prefer a traditional setting like the second photos. I like four prong, and want something that is simple and doesn't sit up high, or have an ornate shank or basket. So much of what we saw were halo settings or three stone, which are lovely, but not what I am most interested in.
  • It sounds like your wants are extremely specific so my best advice is to agree with peek that you look into getting a ring custom made. A good jeweler should be able to talk with you (even if you don't know all the exact terminology) to make something you love.

  • Definitely look at custom, since what you want is so specific - a quick search for "custom engagement rings Boston MA" turned up this: http://www.cynthiabritt.com/

If you're worried about the cost of custom, I can tell you from my own experience that it's not as expensive as you think.  My ex designed my ring, paid $2500, and it was appraised at $5000.  Hope that helps!

  • There's a jewelry store in Kenmore Square called Persona Jewelers.  The owner's name is Gary and he's a nice little Russian guy.  He makes custom jewelry and could hook you up.

I vote you go custom.  Try Persona.
  • Thank you so much for all of your advice! It is really appreciated!
