Can you have bridal party members do readings, or is it supposed to be someone outside of the BP? I have always seen it done with people outside the BP, but we kind of dont want to add any more people to our rehearsal dinner so are considering using BP members. What is the rule on this?

Re: Readers

  • *Many* churches don't allow it. Some will. Like almost anything else, you just have to ask your priest.

I agree that it depends on the church.  At the most recent wedding I attended, the MOH did one of the readings.

Edit: Our dads did the readings, which would solve your problem of adding people to your RD.

Our priest didn't even ask the religion or relationship to us of the readers we chose.

We ended up using the spouses of our bridal party members.
  • Its not that I don't want to add people to the RD, the hosts have said they cant do any more people. Everything has been booked already, so it will just be easier to have someone in the BP or who will already be at the rehearsal do the reading, if possible. It won't be any less special to us because we didn't really have any readers in mind. Its not like we will be settling in any way, if you know what I mean.

  • I understand.  A lot of the time the people in your WP are the most meaningful to you, and so it makes sense to also have them do your readings.

If you have siblings or other family who will already be invited to the RD, could you ask them?

Exactly. I think I might have the mother of the ring bearer do one, as she is my cousin and we are pretty close. Bonus is that she will already be there!

  • FWIW, we had our BM and MOH do our readings. No one batted an eye.

That said, I agree with others that you should make sure of what your parish's rules/requirements are, as it may vary.

I think your cousin or other spouses/relatives of people who will already be there are good choices if head count is an issue.

<div>That's a good idea!  One of my friends had one person do both readings, too, so that might simplify things even more if you weren't concerned about two different people doing the two readings.</div>
