Cakes

Are you planning on having a "traditional" type of wedding cake (3 tiers or whatever), cupcakes, or something "off-beat"?

Re: Cakes

  • Cupcakes plus bday cake for FI

  • I'm making our tiered cake, all fake tiers except one to cut.  Buying torted sheet cakes to actually be cut and served.

I only recommend if you've done a lot of cake decorating in the past.  I laid out a simple design that I know I can execute.  I'm making all of my gumpaste flowers in advance, so it's basically just assembling it the day prior and we're good to go.  Since it's mostly styrofoam, I don't have to worry about internal supports, one less piece to the puzzle.

Yeah. He picked the date, which was fine by me. All I cared about that it was in the fall, but still some what warm.

  • Cupcakes & a small cutting cake. We picked out flavors during my February visit.

    Cutting cake: red velvet.
Cupcakes: red velvet, lemon, cherry cheesecake, blueberry "muffin" and GF vanilla.

We're going to have "normal" sized and "mini" sized cupcakes. (Although the bluberry & cherry cheesecake can't be made in the mini size).
  • We are having cider and doughnuts and a s'mores bar probably.

  • we are having a traditional tiered cake (exact design yet to be determined) with a slightly untraditional flavor, carrot cake :-)  not really wild and crazy, but not the norm that i'm used to

we also will be having a s'mores bar.  still debating if we want to make one of the cake tiers something basic like vanilla with some fruit flavor filling for those (freaks ;-) ) that don't like carrot cake or chocolate

  • Traditional tiered cake, 3 or 4 tiers, with sugar flowers and other decorations on the exterior.

We have chosen two flavors so far - chocolate cake with chocolate ganache, and s'mores (graham cake, marshmallow and chocolate fillings). We can get a third flavor if we want, but I don't know if I care. We wanted buttercream on the exterior rather than fondant and still need to decide minor details like square or round.

Our venue will also provide additional desserts with the cake.

  • We are having a semi traditional tiered cake.  No idea the design we are giving our baker free reign.  The cake is 3 layers with two fillings, it's going to be chocolate cake and one filling is raspberry and the other is dark chocolate.

I think we're doing smores too!  I made FI and smores cake for his bday in March and that's all I heard about for days. Love smores!

I love the cider and donuts idea!
  • I haven't taken pictures during my last few test runs, this was playing with a new lace mold I bought specifically for the wedding.  One tier will be entirely lace.

Still debating adding a tier of ruffles, it depends how the basic design goes, can always add it in later, but didn't want the design to depend on it, it's a bit time consuming.

  • LOVE the lace layer!  (i'm a little obsessed with lace :-) )  jealous of your skills!

  • Thanks for sharing everyone!

    @simplyME22 love the lace!
  • We're having a small cutting cake for us because I have celiac disease. It's going to be a vegan, gluten free spice cake with chai 'buttercream' frosting.

We're going to have an international dessert bar for the guests.

  • Cupcakes (carrot, vanilla with raspberry icing, chocolate with chocolate icing) plus a small top tier for cutting! It will come out late night though, as we have lemon cheesecake for desert (literally the most AMAZING thing I have ever tasted).

We are having an awesome cupcake bakery come out in their food truck and have cupcakes available for everyone.  We are going to pick 5 flavors sometime later this summer.  It should be fun!

  • That lace cake looks a-friggin-mazing!  WOW!

The plan is to have a cake; not sure what flavor(s) though.  Probably a simple 3 tier with buttercream frosting, thinking a chocolate layer, vanilla layer and maybe the top layer lemon cream or something different.  No idea.  :|

Mostly we're keeping ours simple because dessert is included with the lunch we're serving (canollis and some other undetermined dessert as of yet).

I tried SUPER hard to talk FI into doing a grooms' cake, a la "Steel Magnolias" which he shot down.  I mean, come ON!  We live in Texas!  An armadillo shaped red-velvet cake would have been EPIC!!!
  • We are doing pie: apple, pumpkin, and possibly pecan. My FI hates cake so it was a good alternative.
