Not Engaged Yet

Semi WR related post

A few questions for those married and planning. I know I'm on NEY but I figured I would ask anyways.
What kind of a online planning bio did you use?
Did you keep a binder with contracts and ideas or did you mostly do everything online?
Did you set up a separate wedding only email?

We have planned much yet, since we close on our house in less than three weeks now.  Today our condo is being listed as being available for rent. So hopefully we get a good tenant soon. We did decide sometime May- September of 2014.  We are doing the whole catholic church we decided too. We tossed around Vegas, the Bahamas but we're going to stay local.  We going to see in the next week or two if our church has May 10th available.

What is something you are looking forward to this month?
How is the weather by you today?  Here is it way too cold for April, kind of a let down.
Is there anything you are dreading?

I appreciate any response/feedback.

Anniversary

Re: Semi WR related post

  • I'm using a binder that I put together myself that I found through The American Wedding Guide. It's crazy detailed and organized so I'm using that to help guide me along. The binder also has my contracts and planning ideas/inspirations in it as well. It just helps keep all my thoughts and documents together.

I'm using my normal email but I just made a wedding folder on it so I can keep track of everything and not have it mixed up with any of the daily emails I get.

That's so exciting that you're looking at a time frame, it feels good to put down a timeline of everything I think. This month I'm looking forward to getting my engagement photos done and also hopefully finding my wedding dress. We are going shopping this weekend so let the hunt begin lol. The weather has been nice this week so far, it has been in the 60s and sunny which is awesome for running outside.

I'm dreading work this month because it has been so slow and I really need a vacation.

  • Have I said a million times how excited I am for you? Here are some answers from an old married hag:

What kind of a online planning bio did you use?  Like bio that people link in their sig? I think I used Wedding Wire with Weebly for my actual wedding website.

Did you keep a binder with contracts and ideas or did you mostly do everything online? I definitely had a mix of things. I had a notebook (I bought a pretty one, but it wasn't wedding specific) that I used for taking notes at all my vendor meetings. I also stapled color swatches in it, so I always had the colors available. I bought an accordion file folder to keep all documentation together. It was nice to hand that off to my DoC as a single piece.

I also lived on Google Docs. I like spreadsheets, and it was great to be able to access them from any computer and to share with H or my MOH. I found a Google Docs wedding planning spreadsheet template that I used. I also used Wedding Wire for their budget and seating chart tools. They have an app you can access the budget from, so I could mark expenses as I made them.

Did you set up a separate wedding only email? No, but I used my "junk" gmail account that was pretty empty at the time. I used it for vendor communication. RSVPs and other website communication came to that account via the site, so guests couldn't tell it wasn't any special email. We did buy our own domain name for the website.

I would definitely recommend not using your primary email account. There will be a lot of traffic and possibly some spam.
  • I used TK's wedding website for things like maps of the area and hotel info.  We didn't really do anything else.  I used a binder for contracts and just used our regular email addresses.  We just copied each other on wedding-related things.  We only emailed with people we were working with, so we didn't get a bunch of junk.  Google docs was really helpful for the guest list and seating.

  • hollister- have fun wedding dress shopping! Please post pics after you go I can't wait to see what you choose.  My mom is already trying to set up times to go dress shopping.  Right now there is too much going on for that.

leia-  Yes I meant an online bio like what some people have in their signatures.
We'll probably set up a wedding account only, especially because it will help junk stay out of my regular email address.  I think google docs sounds like a great idea.

lasak- Thanks! I'll have to look and see what tools TK has as well.

  • I'm so excited for you!  This was such a great post to read.

What kind of a online planning bio did you use?

I didn't.  Honestly, I used the TK's to give me a checklist and then I put everything in a word document and used strikeout as I completed them.
Did you keep a binder with contracts and ideas or did you mostly do everything online?

No I had a folder for wedding contracts on the computer.  We weren't local so all my contracts were signed electronically.
Did you set up a separate wedding only email?

No.  Do people do that?  Huh.  Not a bad idea lol.

    Noah's surprise Birthday party!
How is the weather by you today?  Here is it way too cold for April, kind of a let down.

The weather is ok.  A bit overcast.  It was really warm and then we had two thunderstorms over the weekend.
Is there anything you are dreading?

My swim class today.  I've gained so much weight I hate my body and I haven't exercised in a while.

  • Thanks raven! That is so great you are having a surprise party for Noah. I wish I would have thought of that for FI his bday is next week.   We'll see about May 10th... if it's available it means we need to start a bunch of things right away while trying to move.  We like the date because a lot of significant events in our lives occur on the 10th so it would be cute.  It won't be the end of the world if the church is booked though.

  • I'm surprised it has worked out so well :) We are playing laser tag.

Well any time in May is awesome, we can be month twins.

  • I am using weddingwire for budget and keeping track of guests. I also have a regular binder with the pocket dividers to keep contracts and receipts in and to make to do lists, reminders, etc. I didn't create a new email but I did set up folders for the vendors and honeymoon stuff that emails go in to so I don't lose anything or accidentally delete something important. So far being organized has helped immensely but I'm paranoid about not keeping things straight and getting screwed somewhere down the line haha

Thanks.  I liked to be real organized and am super detailed oriented so I like having binders and excel spreadsheets.  I'm typically pretty organized because I'm always worried about forgettting something/someone along the line. I'll have to check out wedding wire too.

  • What kind of a online planning bio did you use?
I'm using Weebly for mine. I believe the link is in my siggy.

Did you keep a binder with contracts and ideas or did you mostly do everything online?
I do have a binder with all of our contracts in it. It's just a cheap binder I got from Staples or whatever, with dividers for each vendor.

Did you set up a separate wedding only email?
    Nope.

What is something you are looking forward to this month?
Seeing Aud in a couple weeks, getting my hair colored, being done wedding planning!

How is the weather by you today?
It's freaking cold and I don't appreciate it

Is there anything you are dreading?
My aunt's funeral, planning the rest of this wedding

  • Yay to the start of planning for you!  Good luck on the closing and rental!

On the planning side, I ended up using Wedding Window for my website.  The package also comes with planning options for budgets, timelines, and guest lists.

I had already made an excel spreadsheet with our guest names and addresses before I set up the site, so I'm still using that for now.  So far all but one of my vendors have given me electronic copies of my contracts.  I have a wedding email folder that I keep them in and all other wedding related emails.

As for this month, April is a crazy birthday month in my family so we'll probably be busy with that.  I also have my hair trial today and my make-up trial next week.  Its early for both, but the vendors that come to you seem to book up fast, so I'm getting it done now.

  • What kind of a online planning bio did you use?
I used weebly. It's linked below in my sig.

Did you keep a binder with contracts and ideas or did you mostly do everything online?
I had a manila folder where I kept a lot of stuff. I also created a folder in my email to put these things. I'm a bad bride, though. I rarely if ever went back to look at any contracts for any reasons. Thank goodness everything turned out ok!

Did you set up a separate wedding only email?
YES. I only used it for when I went to a bridal show, but I'm so glad I did. If you go to a bridal show, print a sheet of labels with your name, email address, and wedding date. It will save you from getting writer's cramp!

What is something you are looking forward to this month?
Bingo with my ILs and parents tonight. Running a 10k next weekend.

How is the weather by you today?  Here is it way too cold for April, kind of a let down.
    Chilly and windy, but sunny.

  • Yay for you Danser!  I second the PP above, please post photos of everything, especially dresses!  Do you have any ideas for your colors yet?  I think the colors and flowers are my favorite part of planning.

I, too, am no help in the planning department.  For my first wedding, I had a massive Wedding Planner Workbook that I sort of used, but to be honest, my mom largely took over and helped with a lot of details.  There are tons of workbooks out there, I'm sure you could find one on Amazon.

This time, I am literally shoving contracts and receipts into a big envelope, storing most of the information in my wee head.  It's not recommended, but everything is turning out just fine.  We are foregoing a lot of the things that you will likely want to do (No STDs, favors, programs, limo, signature cocktail, DJ, videographer) and that cuts down on the 'stuff' to keep track of. It works for us.  :)

What is something you are looking forward to this month?
Continuing training for the 10k I'm running in May.  I have a love/hate relationship with running, but I like working towards a goal, so I'm keeping my positive pants on for this training program.

How is the weather by you today?
A balmy 37 degrees, it sucks as I have to run 4 miles today in this crappy weather.  Spring is long overdue in these parts.

Is there anything you are dreading?
I'm not really dreading anything at the moment.  I do owe the State of Michigan $177 for taxes, that also sucks, but it could be worse.

That is an awesome idea about labels for bridal shows! Thank you!!!!! I think I'm going to use weebly for a wedding bio.

radley- I promise there will be pics.
Not sure yet on colors schemes I have ideas but nothing FI & I have discussed yet.

We used a lot of TK's tools, but also kept some excel spreadsheets on the side for data preservation in case TK ate stuff.  There's a lot of gems connected to the guest list management tool here.  Everything from logging rsvps, a virtual space-planning tool, guest menu selection statistics, etc.

Nope, I kept my e-mail to myself at the wedding shows.

  • Danser, I don't know if you have any interest in making online RSVPs available, but Weebly has a really great form tool to handle that. You end up with data that can be exported to Excel. I got about 15% of my RSVPs online.

I never answered your other questions, so here goes:

  • Planning wise, I use an awesome Excel sheet for my guest list.  It's only awesome because it ALMOST has all the addresses in it (FI & his family are slowpokes, haha.)

My sister also got me a wedding planning binder thing that is good for coming up with ideas for questions to ask vendors (silly things, like do they have liability insurance?  apparently that's important!)

I hear rumors that bridal magazines are helpful when going dress shopping, but frankly they kinda freak me out.  Because I mean, a dress should never be $15k+.  I'm going dress shopping May 10th or so (omg your almost date for next year!!) and I'm kinda terrified haha.  I do not like trying stuff on so I hope my mom/sis keep me sane.

Hm, oh, and I DO have a separate wedding email.  Even my venue (that I booked) sends me junk mail about golf tournaments and stuff.  And I hate junk mail in my real mailbox.  Plus, I use gmail so I can search everything and keep everything all organized.  I like it.

This is so exciting and I can't WAIT till you get annoying with planning.  Maybe you can like choreograph my wedding dance?  Cause 6th grade shuffle is so not gonna look good in pictures ;)
