Buying Bridesmaid Dresses from Etsy

I am really struggling with what I want my bridesmaids to wear. My wedding colors are blush pink, mint green, gold, and ivory. I don't like anything I've seen at David's Bridal, and I'd really like to keep the dress under $200...I've thought about tulle skirts, and fancy tops, also them all being in different dresses, but I'm just SO UNDECIDED. Being since they range from a 00 to a 20, these cute websites like modcloth.com or shopruche.com aren't really an option for me. I have contacted several sellers on Etsy, which all seem to be based in China. Are the reviews good? Most of them, yes. Do I trust that they let people post negative feedback? NO. Has anyone out there in wedding land ever bought dresses from these chinese sellers on Etsy? It just seems so sketchy to me!

If you don't think this is a good idea, please direct me to what avenue I should take! HELPPPPPP!

Re: Buying Bridesmaid Dresses from Etsy

  • I would only buy from etsy if they were in the US. But that's me.

Have you asked their budget? Just because you say under $200, that might be over their budget.

I ended up saying knee length and navy= no stress for me. One BM spent $200, but it was her choice. The other is spending around $50 and they get to choose the style they like the most.

Do you care about them matching? If you're that undecided tell them a color and length and let them pick out their own dresses. I took it a step further and just said any black dress. Short, long, tulle chiffon. As long as its black I don care. That is probably a better option with such a wide variety of body types as well. That way you're not stuck searching for one dress that fits everyone's budget and body type. None of my girls go above a size 10 but they're all shaped so differently that one dress looked different on all of them.
  • Try looking at Dessy and Mori Lee designs.

  • I got my dress from Etsy but the seller was in the US. I wouldn't risk buying from China.
  • As a woman who wears size 20/22 (depending on design), I would suggest you focus on a design for that maid.

Try "plussizebridal.com" which also has bridesmaid dresses.  They let people order based on their exact measurements, so if someone has a large chest, a large butt/thigh area, or full upper arms (and your choice has sleeves) they can get what they need without ordering many sizes too large and having to deal with major alterations.  Since they do custom, all your maids, even the petite ones, can order from them too - with the same benefit - so if a size 4 has a large bosom, she'll still get a better fit than just ordering a size 4 standard.

I selected a Dessy Lela Rose design in duchess satin, and since one of our female attendants is quite heavy (size 30 or so) this website was a real lifesaver, because they sell the Dessy design I selected, with this custom feature, and dresses can be ordered online - which helps the other two female attendants in our wedding - who are both super busy doctors.
  • I'd encourage you to think about letting the bridesmaids each pick the dress (in the same color/length, if that's important to you). That way they can find a dress that flatters them and is their style. It also will let them control costs more, and it increases the odds they might wear the dress again.
  • I strongly advise not buying from China, it would just be such a mess if something goes wrong I think, like if you accidentally get sent wrong sizes or something.  If you are so undecided as to what style you want, skip picking out the dress for them.  Like pps said, pick a color scheme and then let your bms pick out their own dresses from wherever that work for them.  Then you don't have to go through the trouble of trying to figure out what is going to look good on everyone plus find something within all their budgets. It will be one less wedding planning thing for you to have to do.  Plus, think about it from your maids pov; wouldn't you rather wear something that you feel you look beautiful in and is a style you like, than something that is just a style that the Bride likes (unless you are also purchasing the dresses for them)? Confident, comfortable, happy bridesmaids are going to look better in photos than uncomfortable ones, no matter how perfect you think the dress you picked out for them all is.  I'd say since you don't already have your heart set on something specific for them all to wear, just let them decide.  You can give them guidelines as far as color, length, even how fancy or not fancy you want it to be.
