Dress blues.

I went for my final fitting tonight. I hate it. It's a strapless organza ball gown and when I put it on, there was all this lovely back fat hanging over the dress. I looked gelatinous. Part of the problem is that the dress is heavy, so it's sliding down. But I think it's just plain too small. The problem is... the wedding is on the 18th and I'm scheduled to pick this dress up next Friday. I don't think there's anymore time for alterations. So now I'm scrambling to figure out how to lose a few more pounds in the next two and a half weeks. Hopefully double-sided tape will help keep the dress up where it should be but I still feel like the blob. I came home and sobbed all over FI and the dog.

I'm wearing a long line bra. I'm going to call today and see if I can go back in and put it on again. I think if they let it out, it'd be better. I will say though - when we hoisted the bra in the back and hoisted the dress along with it, it was a little better. I see lots of double sided sticky tape in my future.

I just cried for like an hour last night. Poor FI's like "omg what do I do? Do you want some ice cream?" and I nearly bit his head off.

So I want to put the dress on again, see if they can let it out (and maybe get a bigger long line bra) and get the sticky tape to hold it up.

Mom wants me to lose ten pounds in 16 days.

Well, full disclosure: my mom has struggled with eating disorders most of her life. So she's not exactly my go-to for healthy ways to lose weight. She thinks if I just cut out carbs and sugar up until the wedding, it'll be fine. I just think that's an awfully big gamble. What if I DON'T lose the weight? What if I make myself sick trying to lose that weight? What if I lose weight, but not where I need to lose it?

She's trying to be supportive but I don't think she knows how in this situation.

Aw Court, I hope you have a better appointment today. Be honest with them. Two weeks is not too late to have the dress alterered, and they should know better than to just say that it fits okay when you're not comfortable. Keep us posted!

Also, this makes me feel better when I'm down, so maybe it will help crack a tiny smile at the very least:

  • Nathan Fillion wants you to be happy because no matter what you're going to look AMAZING on your wedding day because you're marrying an amazing guy and you're going to be so excited and happy.

  • I had my seamstress put very small plastic snaps on my dress and my longline bra. They were put in the corners sort of half way between my armpit and the outside edge of my boob and one directly in between my boobs so it would pul the dress "in" and I wouldn't end up with uniboob. Those tiny snaps held that dress up all day/night.
  • One thing I'm thinking ahead to (my wedding isn't for 6 months) is to try and schedule fittings when I know I'm not bloated or retaining extra water.  Is it possible that's part of the problem right now for you?
  • I don't have any advice. I just want to offer you Internet hugs! (And eventually real hugs b/c we should totally be in real life friends.)
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

No, I think I really just gained weight between the last two fittings. FI and I did a lot of grief eating after my grandmother died and I don't think the working out and dieting I've tried since then has been enough to negate it.

Got an appointment for 7pm tonight. Le sigh. I think my mom's mad because she has to drive 20-25 minutes again to bring the bra/slip and do it all over. Plus more monies for alterations.

Hopefully, it won't be a lot in alterations.  Talk to them about loosening it up just a bit and use the double stick tape trick, or add snaps like I did.  You will be so much happier in a properly fitting dress.

    Breathe.

I just wanted to add, that if you are worried about the dress staying put/it feels like it's going to slip down, you can have the seamstress sew an elastic strap into the bodice. After my "final fitting" I had to go back 3 more times within a week and a half, but they added one of those suckers in and I felt so much more secure. The amount of work they did on that dress in a matter of days is insane, it CAN be done, don't let them tell you otherwise. You are the one wearing it and you are paying them to do the work so don't be afraid to be firm with them.

Hope you leave tonight's appointment feeling much better, and like this...

  • if it makes you feel any better... my final fitting was 6 days before my wedding. I was at the seamstress for FIVE hours and I wouldn't leave until it was right.  I wasn't rude and didn't throw a full on tantrum, but I wouldn't leave until it was right.  They kept saying "oh, it's fine!  see, it's fine!".  NO, it wasn't "fine".   I did leave at one point and went and had lunch, but I said very plainly and clearly that I was not taking my dress home until it was RIGHT, and by my standards.

Be confident and assertive and don't leave there until you know your dress feels right.
  • Oh mothers, sometimes they don't exactly know how to help. My mother has made countless remarks about my weight, some which I've bottled up and hear when I'm feeling down about myself. Other times I have confronted her about it but her excuse was always "Well I'm just trying to help".

As PP's said, drink more water. As you already got an appointment for another fitting, point out to the seamstress what you think needs some work, to ensure the dress stays up. Don't leave until they show how it can be fixed

Oh my gawd I -LOVE- this!  I'm going to have them do this for me too!!

To OP, would this work for your gown?  It sounds like a simple fix without using a bunch of double sided tape, and you would know immediately if it would work or not, whereas it would stink to try double sided tape AFTER taking your gown home just to find out it won't work.

Also, 20-25 minutes is a PITA?  Pffft.  We drive an hour and a half in Texas just to go shopping for a few hours.  Tell mom to suck it up buttercup!!

I'm hoping you'll fix things in your fitting tonight and come  back with good news tomorrow!!

I'm telling you... those little snaps were awesome. They were tiny and they plastic, so they didn't rust or discolor my dress.    Best thing ever.

So they let it out a little in the back and swapped out my long line bra for a larger size (but smaller cups) and it looked much better. My mom's mad because it cost $120, partially because it's a rush job. But I'm going to wind up paying her back for it so WHATEVER.

YAY !!!  I am stuck late at work and I was hoping you would come back with an update.  $120.00 bucks isn't too bad if it makes you feel better and more comfortable on your wedding day.   I'm glad you got in and got it worked out.

Yeah we basically had a big fight in the parking lot because she didn't like that she had to pay for it (I was planning to pay until it came out to be $120 - I would've had to split it between two cards). I was mad because she was making me feel guilty about gaining the weight since my last fitting (in January). She's still convinced I could lose the ten pounds.

I was also going to suggest the elastic strap. It's a MIRACLE worker. My friend just got married and needed one of these because she had a tiny waist but gigantic boobs. The weight of the boobs and dress made it hard for the dress to stand up without making the top too tight which causes the same back fat issue. The strap was a lifesaver. The top could be loosened and that dress wasn't going ANYWHERE.
